Thanks for the help and suggestions so far.

OK, I will be a bit more pateint with the Alien 2. Can anyone suggest a simple, basic image that might fit the bill?
I don't know enough about this yet to understand what ATV / HDMU etc actually means. I will keep reading the forum and try to learn this stuff but any pointers would be appreciated.

    Cheers.

    Hello,

It seems a simple question but hours of research have left my head swimming.
All I need is a twin tuner box for Freesat in the UK. It must have big bold, easy to follow settings, no Linux-speak as far as the user is concerned, my mum is 74 and mounting hard drives in Linux won't interest her! And if possible it would be nice to play media files from mapped network drives.

A branded Freesat box (Humax or whatever) won't do as I want to keep recordings on a PC.

I have an Amiko Alien2 but I can't find a reliable E2 image that does any of the above well. The spark OS is closer but is still odd, and there's the ludicrous splitting at 2Gb....

    Any help much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Andy.

Tee hee! Made me smile despite the frustration of this b**** box!

I am now able to boot to spark again. But it was very flaky until I upgraded to the latest spark (69), now seems happy.
However I can't access e2 and if I try to downgrade to spark (51) to allow me to re-load e2 I get an error about incompatible database and app.

I imagine this not a clone as it came from Lavatronics in Leicester.

Right, got the correct version of Spark. Loaded it from USB.
Then loaded an E2 image (Champions OpenAR-P), it seems to have loaded, pre-tuned to 28.2, however there is no video output whatsoever! Sound is fine.

    Any thoughts? Anybody?

    Thanks.

Research suggests that the Spark version required is: 1.2.51 E2
However this is not available via the Spark update page, the lowest version is *.*.65
Where would I get the 51 version and how would I load it?

    Thanks.

    Help!

I have successfully (apparently, according to the box) installed Enigma2 image, but cannot access it.
If I switch on with OK pressed I get a choice of forc, spar, and enig. Selecting enig just boots into spark!

I have loaded more than one enigma image and each one more than once but as yet I haven't even seen what enigma looks like.

    Am I very stupid?

    Thanks.

I have followed all the instructions carefully. I have loaded the E2 image linked above, it took several minutes of "loading files", then... nothing! No sign of enigma2, I tried holding OK whilst switching on and got a spark/enig menu, selected enig but got spark!

Did it all again but got the same result. Any help most welcome. Thanks.

Thanks I will look at the links.
I am actually planning to use the satellite connections, on 28.2, just the FTA channels though.

Will this image allow files over 4Gb? I'm not sure where this limitation comes in. Should I format the HDD in ext3 or ext 4? It is NTFS at present

    Hello,

I have just acquired a second-hand Alien2 and I'm trying to get to grips with it. It is a 3 tuner version and I only want it for UK FTA channels.
I have tried to make timer recordings. Only one out of six was successful, when I tried to make a short test recording it recorded the same thing twice! Seems a bit odd.
Thiis is using the factory supplied software, I believe. Should I upgrade? And to what?

Is there a work around for the filesize limitation for recordings? HD files will quickly exceed 4Gb.

Is it possible to access the box from the web to set timer recordings?

Any other beginners tips and tricks most welcome.

    Thank You.
