Brazilian striker helped Manchester City to memorable Champions League victory over Real Madrid when Covid-19 pandemic halted football

Gabriel Jesus believes he was playing some of the best football of his career just before the coronavirus pandemic shut down the game.

The Manchester City striker has been battling club legend Sergio Aguero for a regular starting position since he moved to the Etihad Stadium from Palmeiras three years ago.

Jesus was a surprise starter ahead of Aguero in the Champions League clash with Real Madrid and scored the equaliser in a 2-1 victory as City produced arguably their best ever result in the competition.

“I think I have had a good streak, good minutes on the pitch, I started in some important matches, such as against Real Madrid in the Champions League,” the 23-year-old told Goal . “It helps any player to perform better, play more, be happy. I think I had one of my best moments for City before the break.

“Pep [Guardiola] usually does this; sometimes I play the cup games and 'Kun' the Premier League or the opposite. So when I knew I was going to play I saw it naturally.

“Of course I was happy, every player dreams of playing in a match of this magnitude, against Real at the Bernabeu. I’m glad it went well, I helped the team and we managed to win.”

Jesus has admitted to being tough on himself in the past, particularly when going through a goalscoring drought. After moving to England as a teenager, he now believes he can cope better with the tougher times in his career.

“It is a process of maturation, of evolution as a person and as a player,” the Brazilian said. “I went through a very difficult period in my short career, but I managed to get back to doing what I liked most, being happy again.

“Having my family and friends close also helped me a lot at the time, and then I started to live a very positive sequence that lasts until today.”

Guardiola went for an adventurous system in Madrid, starting without a central striker, with Jesus playing primarily in the left wing position and cutting inside when City were on the attack.

The system worked well and Jesus says he is happy to fit in with whatever the City boss demands.

“I always played as a side striker who enters the area a lot, since Palmeiras I've been like that and I feel very good and comfortable acting like that,” he added.

“Of course I also play as a reference in the attack, more tucked inside the area, without any problem and I'm also used to it. But my position was always acting from the side.”

Ligue 1 season ended after French Prime Minister cancels all sporting events until September due to coronavirus

Plans for the campaign to resume in June were recently outlined by the Ligue de Football Professionnel, but all schedules have now been cancelled

The 2019-20 Ligue 1 season has been abandoned after the French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe's announcement that no sporting events will be allowed to take place until September.

Philippe has confirmed that there is no possibility of Ligue 1 resuming until September amid the ongoing fight against coronavirus, with France still in a state of lockdown.

“The big sporting affairs cannot occur before September,” he said in a national assembly on Tuesday. “The 2019-20 professional football season cannot return.”

The French professional league (LFP) announced plans to restart the campaign on June 17 last week , and UEFA has set a deadline of August 2 for domestic leagues to reach their natural conclusions.

However, Philippe's comments have ended all hopes of a return to action for French clubs over the summer, with Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 now indefinitely cancelled.

The governing bodies of French football are due to meet in May to discuss the final league standings, with it yet to be determined who will be crowned champions, who will be relegated and who will win promotion.

Ronaldinho says he was “totally surprised” to have been arrested and charged with using a fake passport in his first interview after being released from prison.

After spending 32 days in prison, judge Gustavo Amarilla decided that the duo can live in a hotel in Asuncion while they await trial on their charges.

Former Ballon D’Or winner Ronaldinho, part of Brazil’s 2002 World Cup-winning squad, said the entire situation had been very hard and he was working with the police to try and resolve matters.

He said: “We were totally surprised to learn that the documents were not legal. Since then our intention has been to collaborate with the justice system to clarify the facts.

“From that moment until today, we have explained everything and facilitated everything that has been requested of us.”

Speaking of the moment he was told he was going to jail, Ronaldinho said: “It was a hard blow, I never imagined that I would go through such a situation. All my life I have sought to reach the highest professional level and bring joy to people with my football.”

The former Barca star said he’d had plenty of opportunities to play football in prison and was constantly stopped for autographs and photos even when inside the maximum security Agrupacion Especializada prison after being arrested at the Resort Yacht and Golf Club Paraguay.

Ronaldinho said that despite being arrested and charged he felt no ill-will towards the people of Paraguay, and that his religion had helped him through the situation.

He said: “The warmth, affection and respect of all Paraguayans has been felt from the first day I arrived in the country until today, and I am very grateful.

“I have my faith. I always pray for things to go well and hopefully this will be over soon.”

Arsenal players reject wage cuts as coronavirus crisis stand-off continues

The Gunners have told their stars that the financial situation at the club will be grave should the season be cancelled or resumed behind closed doors

Arsenal's players have rejected the latest proposal aimed at slashing the club’s wage bill during the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Executives and players have been attempting to secure some sort of agreement during talks over the past fortnight, which would allow the north London club to lessen their financial outlay while football is suspended in the country.

Several options have been discussed, but so far none has been met with enough approval to be put into action.

The idea of a 12.5 per cent wage cut - which would last for a year - was put to the senior squad over the weekend, with Arsenal making it clear to the players that the financial situation at the club would be grave should the season not be completed or if it were to be finished behind closed doors.

There were incentives included in the offer, including one which stated that the players would be paid in full should they secure Champions League football next season.

Had that offer been accepted, it would have seen Arsenal cut around £25 million ($31m/€28m) from its annual £230m ($286m/€262m) wage bill. It was met with scepticism by the players with the Gunners currently sitting ninth in the Premier League.

A vote on the offer was held among the squad on Monday and - as first reported by the Telegraph and since confirmed to Goal - it has been rejected.

For the proposal to have been given the go-ahead, it would have needed the support of 75% of the players, but it is understood that while some would agree to the cuts, the figure was nowhere near high enough for them to be accepted.

The decision comes after the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) advised players to reject all offers of wage cuts during the crisis, advising that only offers of deferrals should be taken into consideration.

Bundesliga CEO Seifert: Summer transfer market set for 'collapse'

As leagues across Europe continue their hiatus, the German league chief believes financial losses will be too great for clubs to spend on players

Bundesliga CEO Christian Seifert has predicted that the summer transfer market is set for a "collapse" amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The German top flight has been sidelined since early March due to the virus, but the league is eyeing a return in early May as the country experiences more success fighting Covid-19 than many of its European counterparts.

Every Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga side returned to the training field this week, as players have been practicing social distancing while training with their team-mates.

The German top flight and second tier are currently working out a plan to return to the field and play in stadiums without fans, completing the remaining nine matches in their schedule by the end of June.

“We are part of the culture in the country, people long to get back a short piece of normal life, and that could mean the Bundesliga plays again,” Seifert told the New York Times.

“This is why we have to play our role here, and that means to support the government and to talk with the government about when we will be able to play again.”

Like other leagues in Europe, the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga have been hit hard financially by the coronavirus. Seifert estimated that not finishing the season would cost the Bundesliga €750 million ($816.5m) and that half of the 2. Bundesliga sides are currently in danger of bankruptcy.

Even if the Bundesliga does return in May, Seifert said that the absence of fans will cost the league €100m ($109m).
