If it's commando, default password is "commando"
Check to see if your flash is full (menu-info should tell you I think)
If your flash is full, maybe plugin skin mover may help you relocate some plugins to an external usb/hdd to free up internal flash

Is your mates share from a white card (caid 0963)?
If so, your configs are only setup for a red card.
Either edit your details to allow 0963 caid or remove the caid/ident entries altogether. (I'd recommend putting the share into a different group other than your card)

Same thing happened my brothers Vu Uno a few years back.
Router and Tv also got fried (all connected to phone-line through router)
With the excess on brothers home insurance policy, it wasn't worth putting in a claim
Nothing looked obviously fried on either the Tv or Uno. (only red power led on both the Uno and Tv and no response from either although the power boards on both were delivering voltages to the system boards)
A new motherboard (from world of satellite) sorted the Uno and managed to get a second hand system board for the TV from flea-bay (Both boards costs were less than the insurance excess but I took a gamble that they were the issue)

Had a similar problem a while back on an ubuntu server (cccam taking over the reader) but dumped cccam and only use oscam.
No problems since but I'm not running a viasat card though.
Let us know how you get on.
Are you using your VU remote to control tv volume?
If so, your receiver volume may be set a bit low.
Try use the openwebif to increase the receivers volume from your pc.

Not sure what os you,ve on the pi but this thread may help:
Lock cardreader to specific usb port
Could be server related.
Try a different emu (cccam/oscam etc)
I'd recommend oscam, then you could get a better idea of what's happening.
