Are you asking how to do it bud?? or just if it is possible?? to which the answer is yes.....
Copy files in linux/telnet like this:
For example old external hdd is mounted as /media/usb and new HDD is mounted as /media/hdd
Copy and paste this command into telnet, then press enter:
If external hdd is mounted as /media/hdd and new HDD is mounted as /media/usb use this command instead:

Hi master G have tried this but getting a message saying 'no such file'. I have set up using device manager as media/usb to copy to media/hdd thereby copying and pasting your script. Not really familiar with using telnet, but where your example shows logging in etc mine just shows 'root@solo2. Is thre something else I need to do?

I just tried it with DCC & putty and it worked, added a screenshot to my previous post. Try with putty or dcc again buddy.. Download PuTTY..
