PlayStation Europe has released a free app for iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4 and Android 1.6 handsets, enabling users to check their PlayStation trophies, search for games, and keep up with friends' activities via their phones.
The app is at first available in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands, and also allows users to catch up on news from the official PlayStation Blog.
Future improvements are to allow commenting on said blog as well as additional language support.
It precedes an official unveiling of a PlayStation Phone, an Android powered handset expected to see the light of day at the Mobile World Congress, February 14-17.
Microsoft, for its part, has gone whole hog in developing an entire mobile phone operating system, Windows Phone 7, with Xbox LIVE integration.
Nintendo of America President, Reggie Fils-Aime, was recently quoted as saying that Apple, with the proliferation of its iPhone and associated devices, is more of a threat to his company than Microsoft.
