I have installed it on linux with playonlinux/wine to open vs_dtv.db and see just encoded chars. Am I doing it wrong? Any guidance?
I would like to understand how the database is structured and work out my own stuff over it.

It looks like chars coding on linux is wrong.
Do you try to use DB from k5 or k7?
