Well here we go again.... yet another STB has started to spit its dummy out.... like the thread title, my tuner has blown...... i will document my attempted repair/s in this thread
I could just go out and buy a new one.... but at about 60 quid for the old type, non FBC twin tuner (that i can actually blind scan with.) a few capacitors and my time, it could work out a load cheaper to repair. I will add to the thread once i get the parts ordered up and start the soldering.
Here is the tuner in question, you will notice that it is nearly 10 years old !!
What is interesting, is with a little research you will find that most of the capacitors used on the tuner (and the VU motherboard ) have a lifespan of about 2000 hours....Basically im saying they are cheap and nasty, which is bloody crazy considering the price of this STB new....
The tuner is 10 years old, the motherboard is 5 years old..... if the repair to the tuner works then i will most likely replace all the caps on the motherboard too, i will defiantly be replacing the ones right by the tuner slot, see pic below
and if you look about there is not that many on the whole board

You will notice the the new FBC tuner has tradition caps, not the smd type..... i may convert to those on the old tuner too
Anyways, thoughts welcomed..... also if anyone can recommend good long lastint cap suppliers it would be much appreciated
TIA
