Ram memory management Edition OS mio 4k plus
i half knew the answer but I thought I would ask chatgpt. This is what I was going to say.
This is normal and expected behavior. While your Edision OS Mio 4K is advertised as having 2GB of RAM, the total available memory reported in the settings summary is lower because:
Hardware Reservations – A portion of the RAM is reserved by the system for critical operations, such as:
The GPU (graphics processor), which needs memory for video rendering.
Other hardware components like network interfaces and tuners.
Kernel and System Overhead – The Linux-based Enigma2 OS itself reserves some memory for the kernel, drivers, and essential processes.
Memory Unit Conversion – Manufacturers often use 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes, whereas the OS calculates it using 1GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes (binary GB or GiB). This results in slightly lower reported values.
Firmware Allocation – Some memory might be allocated for buffering, caching, or other background system functions, further reducing available RAM.
This is common across many devices, including smartphones and PCs, where the usable RAM is always slightly lower than the advertised amount.
So although it quotes total memory, it really means total available memory.
Tanks!
