Problems with sharing USB drives in OpenATV 7.5.1 on home network at Octagon SF8008 4K Twin receiver

  • Hello,

I have an Octagon SF8008 4K Twin receiver with two boot systems: OpenATV 7.5.1 and OpenPLi 9.1. When using OpenPLi 9.1, USB drives connected to the receiver are seamlessly visible and mappable on my home network. The OpenPLi system works perfectly in this regard, and the problem with sharing drives on the network does not occur at all.

In contrast, when I run the device on the OpenATV 7.5.1 system, the disks are not visible on the network, despite the correct FTP connection to the receiver in both OpenATV and OpenPLi. It seems that OpenATV requires additional settings or configurations that are not needed in OpenPLi.

Has anyone had a similar problem? What settings in OpenATV need to be changed to properly share USB drives on a home network? Maybe there are some plugins or solutions that can help solve this problem? I would appreciate any suggestions

  • you probably just need to set network password. There isn't one by default

menu > network > password settings

You also need samba turned on - but that should already be set.

  • Thanks for reply -Going deep inside all parameter settings I can present for this stage following settings

I checked Samba Client Installed Samba Server Enabled

    In “network settings”

    Current Status: Installed

    AutoFS -in

    Chrony- in

    Cron- in

    FTP -in

    Inadyn -in not installed

    MiniDLNA -not installed

    NFS -in

    OpenVPN -installed

    SABnzbd -not installed

    Samba Client -installed

    Samba Server -in

    SATPI -installed

    ShelllnABox -in

    SSH -in

    Telnet -in

    uShare-not installed

In "mount editor " for connected hard drive I have the following settings

Mounting with FSTAB (mount at boot)

    Active Disable

    Local share name sdc8008A

    Mounting type CIFS share

    Server IP 192.168.1.141

    Server share sd1
    Use as HDD swap Yes

    Mounting options rw,utf8tversa2.0

    Username root

    Password ****

The password is already set up and most importantly if I didn't have the network password set up I wouldn't be able to connect to the receiver using Total Commander via ftp where I have connection only by this software

  • I followed the steps in the thread you described on Nov 27th 2022 “Setting up USB/HDD” The question is did I follow your instructions correctly here is in a nutshell how I performed?I prepared small sized USB 32gb

Properly formated USB stick with FAT32 /Quick Format via windows PC

Next steps for performed with Initialise USB

Menu > Setup > System > Storage Device > Initialisation

Clicked yes - and waited... this is really sooo slow to initialise.

    Later

    Set up Swap Manager

Menu > Setup > System > Storage Device >Swap Manager:

    Green Create....

    Yellow AutoStart

    Red Activate

Restarted GUI. And as You mentioned important so USB is picked up in EPG settings

    Save EPG to USB (Important)

Menu > Setup > EPG > EPG Settings

    In my case

    EPG location: /media/sdc1/epg.dat

After Restart GUI. (important so USB is picked up in EPG settings)

    Save EPG to USB (Important)

Menu > Setup > EPG > EPG Settings

    EPG location: /media/hdd

    Save

Unfortunately I am in the same place. I have no good news for myself.

In openatv I have access to connected device drives using Total Commander and also filezilla. Unfortunately I am not able to map the same disks in openatv which are seamlessly visible right after startup in openpli

Perhaps the mount options that are with the parameter” rw,utf8,vers=2.0 ” is appropriate, perhaps not?

Comparison with OpenPLi: In OpenPLi, the problem does not occur, so it is worthwhile to analyze the CIFS mount configuration in that system and try to transfer these settings to OpenATV.

For now, I'll think about how Samba settings differ between the two systems

  • Problem solved! 🎉

In OPENATV 7.5.1, in order to access Samba drives, you need to create a new user account in Windows 11 with the same name and password as in the Octagon SF8008 receiver. After doing this, all disks are visible without any problem.

Conclusion: in OpenPLI such a dependency does not occur. The question - why? However, does it exist and appears after the next installation of the system on Octagon?

Thank you all for your help! If anyone has additional information on this subject, I would be happy to know it.

  • Sounds to me more like a user profile setting in windows then. You shouldn't need to have to create a new profile.
Has your default windows account got a password? It should have if you want to do network sharing. That is probably why your new profile worked. Because you gave it a password. I think its irrelevant you chose the same one as your receiver.
See the last option in my screen grab below.

Have you checked your advanced network settings in windows. i.e is network discovery turned on.

Some further information here of things you can try.

these are my current windows network settings and I have no issues with openatv.
