    Hi.
Could someone please explain what's the difference between with or without ipv6 and what should be generally better? Thanks.

IPv4 and IPv6 are two versions of the Internet Protocol, the system that identifies and locates devices on networks. IPv4, the older version, uses 32-bit addresses, while IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses, resulting in a significantly larger address space. This larger address space is the primary benefit of IPv6, as it solves the problem of address exhaustion faced by IPv4.

    Here's a more detailed comparison: IPv4:

    • Address Length: 32 bits
    • Address Space: Limited, leading to address exhaustion
    • Address Representation: Dotted decimal notation (e.g., 192.168.1.1)
    • NAT (Network Address Translation): Commonly used to overcome address limitations, but can introduce performance overhead
    • Security: Relies on add-on security protocols like IPsec

    IPv6:

    • Address Length: 128 bits
    • Address Space: Vast, essentially eliminating address exhaustion concerns
    • Address Representation: Hexadecimal, separated by colons (e.g., 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334)
    • NAT: Not required
    • Security: Built-in IPSec support for encryption and authentication
    • Improved Routing: Streamlined header format and hierarchical addressing make routing more efficient
    • Auto-configuration: Simplifies network setup and device configuration

In essence: IPv6 was designed to overcome the limitations of IPv4, particularly the address space issue, and to improve performance and security. While IPv4 is still widely used, IPv6 is the future of the internet and is becoming increasingly prevalent.

  • Thank you, very well explained.
Having acquired this important knowledge, given that OSCAMs are available with both IPv6 and non-IPv6, I'm still wondering if there are any differences in security in this case as well making one protocol better than the other.

  • If you wonder whether enabled IPV6 in Oscam, here are some guidelines

    Use case

    IPv6 needed?

    Recommendation

    Only local connections

    NO

    Not necessary

    LAN with IPv4 only

    NO

    Not needed

    Connecting over internet

    Maybe

Useful if clients are IPv6-only or dual-stack

    Future-proof setups

    YES

    Good to enable
