If it's really a USB-port and not a metal SATA-port, then I don't see any reason why any other USB-devices wouldn't work in that USB-port.
USB is an international defined. Literally: Universal Serial Bus - i.e. standardized and determined by precise rules / functions / algorithms.
So if it's a USB-port and you stick any USB-device in there, with sufficient power supply, it should work. Stick a USB WiFi dongle in there for example and then type the command in Linux to verify the device connection lsusb or check the system log buffer with the command dmesg. -

The guy asked if there is possibility to use the connector inside, as a regular USB interface (and not for external drive only). -

Yes, it could work, but it needs to be done by a technician. The connection needs to be modified on the motherboard. There are documents online... you can leave the internal mini USB and do many useful things to the DM 800... by expanding the software.
