Web I/F M3U8 Streams Problem

    Anyone have any ideas why M3U8 streams that used to open directly in VLC are now being opened in a new browser tab instead on Chrome, Edge & DuckDuckgo. If I use Opera the file is saved to 'downloads' from where it can then be opened but in the other browsers it always opens in a new tab & subsequently does not work.

    Pretty much all browsers have stopped this type of stream now


    Years ago, Chrome would:

    • See .m3u
    • Detect VLC as the handler
    • Ask once → “Always open with VLC”

    That behaviour is gone.


    Now Chrome:

    • Treats .m3u as a download
    • Never auto-launches external executables
    • Never remembers “always open with”

    This was removed to prevent:

    • Drive-by malware launches
    • Silent app execution
    • Credential-stealing media handlers

    ** A person who feels appreciated will always do more than what is expected **
