  • This is a nice new thread. Wouldn't want to upset thatfellow ;)

anyways I had posted this at the tail end of his ubuntu tut:

'Having a wee play with this. But when I log into my router I can't see the linux PC. It is also wired to the router.
Do I need to install samba?'

I can now see linux PC on my network :stmutz:

I had to reset my router to factory settings and install new firmware.

Took me about 6 installs of ubuntu to figure what the problem was. But at least I now know what 'sudo' and 'nano' are!

  • very strange that it couldnt be seen by the router, i would think that it was an ip conflict rather than a problem with samba
as long as ssh is installed on the linux box it should be accessible using putty etc, its only when you want to share files on the network you need samba installed.
i dont have samba installed on my ubuntu server and its accessible through ssh, ftp etc.
