Nice idea but i do not think this is possible, would be happy to learn otherwise though.

Did have an idea um:-
Modify the firmware by adding Debian or any other distro, setup a debian server install a screen and drivers for the hdmi port, then simplying apt get install a gui and tada then simply install network driver and install xbmc maybe even try doing a dual boot?

except openbox doesn't use real linux and you would have to start from scratch making new firmware.
Openbox uses TDS2 for the os made by Ali -
The real linux receivers I have read about all have a hardrive built-in,which the chinese openbox receivers don't have.
The russians have an openbox s9,which is real linux and have hardrives built-in but use the sti processor.
Their upgrade files are like 20 or 30meg,easy to avoid those when looking for new chinese openbox s9 firmware.
They are .ird files instead of .abs
