change server ip

    my server has a static ip of 192.168.1.5 but my virgin isp router isp has a gateway of 192.168.0.1 and cant be changed to suit the server, but i also cant use putty ta access the server to change the ip? any ideas?

    Enable DHCP on the server so the router can assign a new ip address, then set static ip address in the router..

    Can't even access the server mate. The new router only recognises 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.254. Gonna have to install the old router ffs grrr!


    The only thing you need to do, is assign your windows pc in the range of your server.


    So.. Give your client PC a fixed ip of 192.168.1.200 / 255.255.255.0.
    This way you can access your server and change the IP.


    During the changed ip, you won't be able to access internet, because your router is in the 192.168.0/255.255.255.0 segment.


    So.. Change it back when finished.

    you would need to access the server direct rather than over the network from remote computer and run a console and edit from there - if the router is 192.168.0.1 then the devices in your network will have to be 192.168.0.x - or you may be able to change the 0 to 1 on the virgin router - most routers let you do this (less likely if it is the stock router from your isp)

    If I take a while to respond, you can see why.....
