Does your router make much of a difference?

  • Are you using a BT line (ADSL) or Virgin Cable (DSL)?

  • UPC or Eircom then. Does your service come down a twisted pair phone line or through a Cable service?

  • Nah you've lost me lol.

The reason i am asking is that ADSL routers require more settings that some routers have and others don't. Chipsets on certain routers can also cause issues.

I used to have Issues with O2 when i had ADSL. It turned out that O2 network doesn't work too well with Connexant Chipset routers, where as they work fine with routers that use a Broadcom chipset. Most broadband providers have their own selfhelp forums where you will probably find out your answer. Just don't mention cardsharing as most ISPs get a bit narky about it.

It may be worth looking there to see which is the best router for you to use. If you get your services from a cable company like UPC it may well be the same as Virgin Media where they provide the modem/router.

They gave me a 100Mb Netgear Superhub which is crap. I ended up putting the hub into modem mode and connecting a different router to it, to resolve port forwarding issues.
