Commando 14.7 DM500

Sorry it was so long in coming, but we hope it was worth the wait. As always, FTA only and contains no softcams nor keys.

What's new?

Set My Location makeover- much easier and more intuitive now. DO THAT FIRST!
Some new GUI Themes to try, including the Classic neutrino from dBox2
Selectable default Audio- English ~ NAR ~ AC3
RT-EPG load via the GUI is now 'clean' with no annoying popups
Reboot plugin dropped (Reboot available in Timer 'Types' instead)

The Icing on the Cake

GetEPG Autogen no longer just logs any unmapped channels it finds. It now automatically calls GetEPG AddNew to zap to that channel and scan for it's EPG ID with dvbsnoop. It can tell the differerence between a new channel and one that's been renamed, and edits the user mapfile accordingly, on the fly!

If it's a renamed channel, it edits the existing line. For a new channel, it appends a new data line to the end of the correct bouquet section. Plus it's all reported in detail in a logfile in the /var/log folder, and a summary at the end of the usermap. See the docs for full details.

C14.7 Online Updates go LIVE!

Our first online update for Commando 14.7 comes only five weeks after release, so you will see that we haven't been letting the grass grow under our feet since then!

Before you go pressing buttons on your remote, please make sure you BACK UP your existing image and save it to PC. And please READ the important introductory note in the attached What's New? document before you start, otherwise (on this first occasion only) the online update will NOT complete properly.

This update is ground-breaking stuff, as it includes a SquashFS root partition reflash at the end! Don't forget- first RTFM (Read the effing manual)!

Then it's MENU > 3 - Utilities > Online Update

We were planning to announce this on Sunday 3rd March, but a server swap made it too ri***. So we delayed for a day to let the dust settle.

New Update Available Now

If you have the 27 Jan 2013 release version of C14.7 installed but have NOT yet applied an online update, then PLEASE read the attached helpfile which will guide you through a SIMPLE manual step required to complete the upgrade fully!

If you did apply the 04 Mar 2013 online update, but remember it only taking seconds, rather than a couple of minutes with an auto-reboot, then YOU need to read the important info as well, please.

Users who DID successfully update on the second attempt can verify this easily. Go to the Audio Menu in Settings, and if you see the new 'Audio-Priority Settings' item at the bottom, you're all ready to run the latest update from the Utilities Menu.

and another root.img update! This is for allocating our new default ukcvs picon to any channels that don't have their own logo in the Infobar (about 600 of 'em?). Only a cosmetic tweak, but a good learning curve on modding the binary code to get it working, pinching a concept found in E1 gay Enigma, LOL!

We now have over 90 new or updated Picons thanks to our new Logo Meister- Ronan!

Also picon-related, where GetEPG Autogen finds an unmapped channel and the channel is identified as "renamed" (rather than "new"), we now check to see if a picon exists for the original channel name. If it does, we rename it to match the new channel and give details in the GetEPG_change.log file! This was no mean feat to script, when you consider that the old channel name in rdmap.dat and bouquets.xml might be "Massive R&B" while it's corresponding picon filename is "Massive R&B.raw" - think about it...

By special request, we have also added user custom support for the Czech, Hungarian and Sl***k languages, by planting symlinks in root out to /var so those guys can have a bash at translating our default English or Deutsch into their own lingos for the menus. Good luck, fellas!

Bug fixes: "True Ent+1" now tied to it's parent in radiotimes.scan (thanks, napster!). In C14.7 release, an NTP time-sync call was made during boot that failed, causing a 10 sec timeout between the bootlogo appearing and the gun-cock sound. This was caused by no dns server being ready. So we disabled the NTP request in the first online update, making boot time 10 seconds faster. We now have NTP working properly in boot, good news for oscam users we are led to believe...

And PaphosAL has had to write a 100 lines "I must test my modded scripts FULLY before implementing them in online updates!" His DOS2LINUX masking used a * wildcard for ALL files in /var/tuxbox/plugins effectively nuking the 11 .so binaries in there, doh... Thanks to Wullboy and Napster for alerting us to this stupidity. Issue now fixed and DOS2LINUX tool is now safe to use again. This update replaces the files in that folder that may have suffered collateral damage..

And thanks again to Ronan, we now have proper picons for the BBC1 and BBC2 provinces! This is why the latest online update has been delayed a day or so, while we checked out the picons situation, and decided to make a clean sweep of it all, so that all the dead wood in the picons folder is nuked! Latest count is 52 picon symlinks, and 311 dedicated solid picons, making 363 in all, wooo!

WARNING! As always- If you've only recently flashed the 27 Jan release C14.7 and haven't yet carried out an online update from MENU > Utilities then the first time you do so, it will all be over in seconds! You MUST delete the /var/etc/version file and then repeat the update process, and the FULL update will then work correctly, and WILL continue to do so in future, trust us!

AutoBouquets is now encased in 8 inch thick armour-plating! A very fast and very
intelligent checker script now analyzes the update scan bouquet and only hands
over to AutoBouquets to complete it's final phase if all is in order. If not, it
reverts your system to exactly how it was beforehand and loads the EPG if this was
scheduled to do so.




The sectionsd bug causing GetEPG (but not RT-EPG) to be 2 hours out (on GMT) where
users in Europe are set to CET/CEST timezone is now fixed! This is one reason why 
a new root image reflash is needed on this update.




If GetEPG Map Autogen finds a new or renamed channel, it now adds it to the new 
channels.cfg mapfile 'on the fly' rather than waste two or three precious minutes 
running a second pass afterwards.




The gun sound at startup can now be switched off in the Settings > Boot & Standby 
Options menu, the other reason for the root reflash. BTW, not a lot of people know
this, but you can use your own sound at startup, if you transfer your MP3 soundbite
file to /var/etc/ 'as' custom.mp3 - and that will be played instead of ours!




More new picons from Ronan, including H2, History, BT Sport 1&2, *** Living, etc.

part of it's processing (online connection required). See the 'Hints and Tips'

Oh, and online updates will now work properly even on the 27 Jan 2013 release version
of Commando 14.7! It only took AL five months to spot a simple workaround to fix the
tarball installer issue that caused the original (and embarrassing) hiccup, doh

Radical overhaul of the /var/bin scripts folder, where two dozen standalone scripts
have been consolidated into four super-scripts, so avoiding much duplication.




Utilities Menu is now on the BLUE button, with pretty coloured buttons! SML is now
always on tap in there. Volume control menu moved from AutoBouquets Wizard into the
new Utilities menu too, with Swap Volume keys, and Online Updates, DOS2LINUX, etc.




A number of (AL-induced) bugs in RT-EPG were found and fixed. We recommend that 
users running RT-EPG mode carry out the SML again. After a run of AutoBouquets, 
everything will then be as it should be.




More tasty picons from Ronan, including a selection of five default picons for the
rubbish channels that don't have a dedicated picon. These constantly switch every
5 minutes, using an infinite background loop routine. Purely cosmetic, but fun...




Finally, a smashing new GUI Theme by Ronan for you to try, where he has matched the
colour scheme found on the *** HD box. If ever a C14.8 is released, this will be the
default theme, for sure! It's called '*** HD' and thanks, Ronan!

NEW C14.7 22 October 2013 Online Update!

Well, as the dust finally seems to have settled from Rupert and his snotty-nosed little oiks playing with their shiny new 28.2E satellite, it's high time we had a new online C14.7 update, yeah?

Another root update with loadsa new features, all explained in the attached readme. So please READ, yes?

As always, feedback is welcome, even if you cannot fault it. If you can, we want to know! Contrary to popular belief, we won't bite your head off for reporting any apparent bugs or anomalies you might stumble across. New ideas are always welcome, too! We're very proactive, and quick(ish) to respond.

11th Commando 14.7 online update 22 September 2013 (unannounced snapshot)




Some fine-tuning in the 'Create new GetEPG usermap' automap scripting:
1. 	Fixed bug that duplicated movies channels to end of entertainment bouquet as 
	well as in their own 'movies' section (if a channelname containing the string
	'movies' exists in 'entertainment')
2.	Fixed a 'Catch 22' situation where if rdmap.dat is non-existent, it wouldn't 
	let you	create a new one, doh...
3.	Original default EPG settings for a newly-created rdmap.dat usermap were in
	hindsight a bit ambititious. These have been moderated to give approx 10,000
	events, using 5.9mb memory and taking just 2m 4s to load

12th Commando 14.7 online update 29 September 2013 (unannounced snapshot)




1.	Feedback from Fano on DWZ alerted us to the sad fact that AL's limp attempt 
	to patch "BBC Interactive" into RT-EPG had broken it. So out it comes, as RT
	doesn't have epg for these two channels in any case. Win some, lose some...
	Don't worry, it works fine for GetEPG (although "BBCi 2" isn't yet carrying 
	epg data to go with the allocated stream epg-id dvbsnoop found for it). 
2.	The font used in the 'Commando Toolbox' shell menus has been changed from the
	original Micron size 17 to Pakenham size 27 (same font as used in TuxCom). 
	This is a bolder but more condensed fontface, allowing us to squeeze a bit
	more info into the helplines. It's also much easier to read, you'll find!
3.	New layout for the AutoBouquets > '+1 Channel Sorting' menu. Now prioritized
	and easier to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

Commando 14.7 online update 22 October 2013




1.	LraiZer has once again done us proud with his new Audio-Priority v2 which he
	has coded especially for the DM500 architecture. (Our previous offering was a
	converted dBox2 version, suffering from lip-sync issues after staying on the
	same channel for a couple of hours). Now it's more like 5 to 6 hours before
	lip-sync drift becomes noticeable! Thanks, LraiZer!

2.	Musical chairs on the remote control again. We didn't like the Softcam Restart
	function on the [GREEN] button, as this was too liable to accidental presses.
	Also, the green key still did 'Audio Select' in infobars for other apps, where
	it was now wrongly captioned. Here's the revised setup:
	[GREEN]: Audio Select (as per original)
	[TV]: Softcam Restart (with yes/no confirmation in case of accidental press)
	[AUDIO]: Cure Lip-sync drift (not that this should be needed anymore)

3.	Big problems in the first half of October with the changeovers to the new 28.2E
	satellite. It all seems to have settled down now, which is why this update was
	postponed from two weeks ago! Our new satellites.xml is included, and thanks to
	Ronan, Wiz, and CG121 for their helpful input with this.

	We are now monitoring this file every morning, and if changes are detected, we
	will update the satellites.xml zipfile on the ukcvs server. You can download
	and auto-install this at any time with our new item in the Toolbox > Utilities
	menu. The hint lines and popups tell you to reboot for the new file to become
	effective, so it's up to you when you do this. We haven't forced a reboot.

4.	All of Ronan's new and reworked / updated picons are included, thanks Ronan!




5.	Bug fix: Oops, updates were overwriting the user-customizeable /var/etc/bq-ref
	file for your preferred bouquets pecking order. Now fixed, and sorry about that

6.	We've restyled the boot logo in order to reduce the file size. The last root
	update filled the root partition to the very last available byte. We prefer to
	have some empty space between the end of the read-only SquashFS partition and 
	the starting point of the writeable /var JFFS2 partition. The revised logo has
	given us a healthy 16kb of breathing space here now.

7.	We have now turbo-charged AutoBouquets with a 'Fast Mode' option which you can
	try if your box is online. This reduces AutoBouquets / Automapping processing
	time down from 11 minutes to just 4 minutes! It bypasses the usual pre-Scan and
	Update Scan phases by downloading OUR daily-maintained files from the ukcvs 
	server. It's smart, and will 'fall-back' to the normal method if the download
	failed for whatever reason.

	Further development is hoped for from LraiZer with AutoBouquets (and also 
	GetEPG), using some of his ideas from his latest E1 version. Using the much
	faster NIT, BAT, and SDT scanning, for example. Meanwhile, fast mode will do
	the job nicely for you!

8.	A cool idea from the aptly-named 'Cool Guy' (CG121). When you load GetEPG, it
	now checks the services.xml file to make sure that the special radio EPG data
	channel actually exists. If it does, away it goes! But if it doesn't, then it
	now gracefully aborts the process with a helpful popup message and a logfile
	is also created in /var/log to help you resolve the issue.




9.	Another time-saving in****tion for AutoBouquets is that if you don't have EPG
	set to load at boot, then when AutoBouquets and the follow-on automapping have
	completed, your box won't auto-reboot afterwards anymore. It will simply reload
	the new	channel lists. So manually reload GetEPG when it suits you, during an 
	AD break. If you're set for RT-EPG mode, then this will automatically reload 
	behind the scenes in this scenario...

10.	And last but not least. Radio Mode and Scan Mode now have pretty background
	pictures as a refreshing change from the normal boring black screens. Both
	are ON by default, but if you prefer not to have them, then they can be set to
	OFF individually in the Boot & Standby Options menu. These two toggles will
	work 'on the fly' and will NOT be undone by future updates.

14th Commando 14.7 online update 10 November 2013 (maybe the last 14.7 update?)




1)    On the last update (involving a root reflash), some users reported that their
    box was "bricked"! Utter bollox! The correct terminology is that it "crashed"!
    Reason? You had a 7.55MB backup image you'd forgotten about in the /tmp folder
    and we were trying to download the update 2.73MB root.img file in there too!

    Result? Out of memory, doh... Sorry! We really thought we had measures in place
    that prevented such collateral damage, but it was missed. Now in place, honest!
    Along with other TLC that only writes the new /var/etc/version file AFTER a
    successful update, NOT before. So that if summat goes wrong, you can press the
    update button and try again. All fine tuning, and a learning curve, guys...

2)    Utilities menu BLUE > BLUE > YELLOW and deeper in. We've given you an option to
    have the standard 'global' satellites.xml or the skinny and much faster 28.2E
    only version to download from our servers. Needs a reboot to apply, which the
    popups tell you.  We're not forcing a reboot on you with this one.

3)    More new and updated picons from Ronan and AL, with deadwood removed




4)    Good idea from CG121 was to error-trap if the EPG Radio data channel is missing
    in services.xml BEFORE trying to load GetEPG. Jeez- why did we NOT think of this
    before? We took it a step further, by also checking for this at the end of GetEPG
    automapping, with a popup warning and also logged to /var/log

    Please note that if your box is connected online, and AutoBouquets is set to Fast
    Mode, then this shouldn't be an issue in any case! It's caused by a particular
    transponder mysteriously shutting down periodically. Mind games, maybe?

5)    Major rethink of the AutoBouquets safety checking and self-healing routines...
    If you're running in standard mode and a problem is found where AutoBouquets
    can't complete, if your box is online, we give you a guaranteed download fix!

    Otherwise, we deduce that either your box is offline, or UkCvs has forgotten to
    pop £2 in in the meter, so has temporarily gone down. Either way, we restore 
    your box to how it was to begin with, and tell you to try again later, via a
    log file and OSD popup. But this version of AutoBouquets is near it's end...

6)    Thanks to Lincsat for pointing out that we weren't locking the remote control
    in Autobouquets Fast Mode. Now (conditionly) sorted.

7)    In AutoBouquets standard stream mode, we noticed a slight lip-sync slippage at
    the point where the Update Scan hands over to the AutoBouquets Stealth Check.
    So we fixed that with a momentary rezap for normal(ish) viewing thereafter

8)    SBO now all sorted (thanks to LraiZer and Jim). Not to mentiom that "Primetime"
    should be OK now, as well!
