How To: Check System temps on Linux server.

  • Just a quick how to for checking cpu temp, fan speeds etc.

This is for Debian but can also be used on Ubuntu.
You need winscp, putty and 7zip.
First of download the latest lm-sensors to your pc from here Download and extract the folder using 7zip, anyone using later versions of ubuntu may already have it in the repos.
To check in Ubuntu.. sudo apt-get update.... sudo apt-get install lm-sensors.
    Manual install the Debian way.
To install it the manual way copy the folder over to your home folder using winscp.
The following commands are run as root using putty
    apt-get update
    apt-get install flex
    apt-get install bison
    apt-get install make
    cd /home/cccam/lm_sensors-3.2.0
    make all
    make install
Thats lm-sensors installed now it needs to be configured, this is the same for Ubuntu and Debian and is again done through putty
    Ubuntu = sudo sensors-detect
    Debian as root = sensors-detect

The output will ask a lot of questions its safe to answer yes to each one.
When finnished to read your system temperatures and fan speeds in putty just type sensors and it will be displayed.

This is a great little tool but does not work on every motherboard chipset, it showed every temperature and fan speed on my old asus board but only shows cpu core temps on my MSI board.
