  • As the title says I need some help in reducing high RAM usage - Always at 95% - 97%. I have created a 256MB Swap File on my USB but it appears to have very little effect????

I used to use a plugin call LSK Free Memory but it is not compatible with my current image. So has anyone got any advice/suggestions for reducing this high RAM usage

    Thanks

  • Thats perfectly normal usage for a linux system.

Linux works differently than windows, in such a way as it considers unused memory as wasted, Linux will ALWAYS use as much as possible only releasing portions when requested by programs etc.

as for using so called memory freeing programs or cache flushing, thats a very temporary measure and frankly of no benefit unless your box is suffering issues such as freezing up.

I see what you're saying but yesterday a lack of RAM caused my box to loose its USB swap file, not download EPG, crash everytime I tried to use BH speed up to disable unused plugins and generally be painfully slow when changing channels etc etc.

Since using the telnet commands all the problems have not reoccured

well if it works for you then great but also consider this, The Duo is a satellite receiver and not a all singing and dancing media center added to that it's starting to get on a bit, so be carefull what plugins you install. personally i have two Duo's running the Latest ViX image, one thats over two years old and another thats a little younger and neither ever gives me issues with memory, but on these boxes i use very few plugins, such as CCcam 2.2.1, OE-Alliance OnDemand and AutoBouquetsMaker and thats about it.
