help with telnet and ftp from outside

    Hi,


    I have a ubuntu server and would like to telnet and ftp from outside my local network.
    The port forwarding is no problem, but i cannot access my server.
    Do i have to configure something on the server?
    firewall??

    Once you forward FTP (21) & telnet (22) ports to your server IP, you should be able to FTP in no problem.


    You might have to enable FTP in your router also..


    Never open port 21 or 22 directly or you will have some Chinese or Russian dude in setting up shop on your router
    If you have a few devices that you want to be able to access FTP & telnet on i.e. Server & Set top Box's

    NOTE: Even these external ports might be a bit obvious, so make them something more random if you wish


    Also, enabling FTP/Telnet access to your home network is a ri$ky business. Make sure to have Firewall etc. configures

    the protforwarding in my router is ok. Cause i used the same setting for my server (DM500HD) and it worked ok. Now i only changed the ip address for the new server. So i think the router in not the problem.
    Do i have to change something in my ubuntu server?

    If you have done it for your DM500, maybe port 21 & 22 are already in use on your router for that port forward. That's why I suggest above method..
    And no, you don't need to do anything else with ubuntu as long as you set it up with openssh-client & openssh-server.


    Try using port 22 for both putty (SSH Connection Type) & WinSCP (SFTP Connection Type)
