  • so i got my hands on a second dish at an auction.
it is an old sly dish but i was thinking of doing a search for other satellites and see what the story was there.

ok so firstly is there anyway i can check the lnb to see if it is damaged without all the hassle of trying to mount it and search for a sat in the *** ?

also if i were to search for other sats would a sly lnb work just fine or would i need to replace it with a new lnb like a freelance type or so to speak ?

    thanks

  • a sly LNB will work but i`d go for a better type i.e -> Inverto Black Ultra

also im guessing the dish is only 60cm so you will be v-limited what you can receive on that sized dish?
13e & 19e & few others are possible depending on your location?

If my post helps hit the Thanks ;-)

  • cheers for that info ^^^^

but i did come across this thread:
    http://linuxsat-support.com/di…24ky-dish-other-sats.html

the guys on there seemed to be doing ok on a 60cm dish.
basically i am just playing about at the minute to see if i actually can get other sats.

but for the moment i am trying to work out if the lnb is fecked or not.
i have the dish all connected up via the sat finder but it is not secured to anything so i am standing in the garden waving it about like a luinatic looking for a signal.
i am pretty sure the neighbors are having a good laugh but what the hell
    lol

  • I think the fastest way will be to swap the lnb onto the dish you are using first and test if it doesnt work then you know as that dish will already be lined up

but its raining lol bahh humbug
    will do cheers

  • If its a zone 2(60cm) *** dish you will receive 13/19 28.2 obviously and even 1 west and possibly others,if its a zone 1(48cm) dish its really only any good for 28, You wont be able to diseqc motor the dish either really as you would need an 80 cm minimum for that..

If you are interested in other sats put a 1.8 channel master dish up... neighbours will be thinking you work for nasa hehe.

I have a 1.1 on the roof here and get 42 east and also get most other sats all the way round to 30 west.

  • i have a 1.8 channel master !
    a 78cm
    and standerd mini dish !
60 cm dish will get quiet a few sats here in the southwest ! and i believe you can even receive sirius well up ion the north east and parts of scotland!
Its a great introduction to finding what else is available ! Now your hooked it wont be long before you get an even bigger one :snicker:

80cm is a good size dish thats not too over the top and willreceive most sats !
Your 60 will get some hispasat channels round at 30west and turksat over at 42 east - They both have strong beams _ Get outthgere and give ita go !

  • In the Midlands and the south you can get quite a few sats with a 43cm dish.

9e, 13e, 19e, 28e, 5w and 30w are an easy catch with a zone one dish, although you do have to modify the lnb/lnb holder slightly so you can get the correct skew on the western satellites.

I have seen a few people motorise a zone 1, but they are only any good for the strongest of sats up there like the ones i mentioned previously.

    Nano

  • so all that said and thanks again for the info, would this be the handiest way forward for me then:
Technomate 97cm Solid Satellite Dish Kit

    niall_b73

No not really!!! that is a fixed dish kit so in other words it would sit static on 1 satellite unless you moved it manually which would be a real pain in the ass.

Are you just having a play around as your sat dish if zone 2 is fine for most fixed satellites.

If your wanting a little motorised system to automatically adjust then you are after a diseqc system.

I would recommend a 1 meter or 1.1 dish and technomate or dark motor for this. The forum sponsor should be able to help you here with this type of system on request although i cant see this unless on a receiver deal but i might need to visit specsavers. that said a 90cm diseqc motorised system will also be very good

Be aware certain councils prohibit the use of satellite dishes above the size of 90 cm but thats mostly if the said dish is installed in full view and this will depend on what your los (line of site is)// chimney/back garden etc should have no limits

  • would it not be possible for me to add my own motor to the above dish or am i missing the point ?

    niall_b73

Its a lot to take in mate but i can see you understand it.

You can add a motor to almost any dish you own or have previously bought!!!!

The point is trying to get a deal with a full pack so to speak////motor/dish/lnb/bracket/consumables===cable/bolts/fplugs etc etc//maybe even a receiver if you need 1.

If you already have a decent reciever then i think its just a motorised dish pack you need.

    Good luck!!!

  • Yes mate you could add a motor to the tm90 dish !

  • Yes!!! and that would be a very nice system indeed. Better than my 2007 setup thats for sure.

The motor with metal gears ensures that the motor will last much longer when subjected to high winds..mines has plastic gears:( so i need to upgrade!!

You will need a twin lnb if you own a receiver with dual tuners and you will also require twin cabling(shotgun cable)

  • if you choose that particular dish it is imperative to use The inverto ultra black LNB
Inverto Black Ultra Single LNB - Trac Communications - Aerial - Satellite - HDMI - Digital Reception Components

the lnb has a long collar and allows it to be positioned correctly by having the white face as close as possible to the dish !

The twin version is slightly shorter !

Why do you need a twin on a motorised ! Lots of people (myself included) use a fixed dish for there local satellite (mine is 28e) and a motorised to surf with - this means i can record BBC whilst watching foreign (porn-football-feeds) :snicker: the porn bit as of course not relevant in my case !

correct me if i am wrong but my understanding for the twin lnb would be for my single tuner in the sitting room and the other for the bedroom.

now after reading what i have just typed in above i know for a fact that that just will not work (brian is slowly but surely melting away)

ok so forget the bedroom and now just concentrating on the sitting room i really only need a single lnb, dont i ? i still dont need a disqe switch do i ?

can you recommend a decent lnb or will any do ?

thankfully after all them questions i think i finally have it ;)
