hello lads
ive been reading the ubuntu server tutorial and i thought id try install the ubuntu server on a old laptop ive got, just to see/learn if i could do it and its better than having to make conversation with her indoors.
my question is can i partition my lappy hdd and use the spare space to install it or would i have to use the whole disk and loose all my stuff of it.

you can set ubuntu to use free space on the drive, make sure you defragment the windows partition first, you will then get the option to boot into ubuntu or windows on startup but be prepared for a windows mbr error, make sure you read on how to fix this before the install and have a windows disk handy

You can install ubuntu in to the external 8 or 16 gb usb flash disc also..
