i recently installed and set up ubuntu server, using the automatic oscam install. all is working ok.
but i keep seeing on the forum that there are oscam file updates. so the question is,
is it advantagous to update the oscam file from the original with the auto install.
and second how to update: which folder etc. to place the new file.
any help appreciated.

There are improvements with every version as oscam is constantly updated. To update download the latest file & ftp it to /usr/local/bin.
Rename your old oscam file to oscam.bak ( just incase there are problems with new )
Rename the new file to oscam & chmod it 755, finally reboot & enjoy the latest version. -
what is the easiest way to see which version of oscam i am using??
-
Login to oscam webinfo, the version will be at the top of the page.

just trying to update with the latest oscam file.
after ftp new file to /user/local/bin. i rename the new file as oscam and the old file as oscam.bak
i then put this command in terminal chmod 755 /user/local/bin/oscam and get the message file does not exist.
i assume i am doing something wrong in the command line. can anybody tell me please.i am in root

Obviously you have gone wrong somewhere but cant say where from the info given, using your ftp program right click on the file choose properties & chmod 755 that way.

thanks ten below, but i had made a spelling mistake, put user instead of usr, sometimes does not matter how many times you look u cannot see the obvious.
-
So its ok now?
-
yes working ok thanks
-
cd /usr/src
svn co h**p://oscam.to/svn/oscam/tags/1.10/ oscam-1.10 (replace ** with tt)
cd oscam-1.10
mkdir build
cd build
cmake -DWEBIF=1 ..
make install
Above is all done as root (pc server) when done simply move the file to were you want.
Simple method, once done type ls and this will show you the files in the current directory, oscam will already show in green (executable)
So today's latest oscam file is 6295
So lets rename it until we want it running
mv oscam oscam6295.bak
Lets assume your oscam file is in /usr/local/bin
cp oscam6295.bak /usr/local/bin (simply change to your path)
Now thats done lets delete the oscam folder you just created.
cd /usr/src
rm -rf oscam-1.10
Now go to your oscam directory
cd /usr/local/bin
ls
This will now show you oscam and oscam6295.bak
Now lets assume your old oscam version is 6280
killall oscam
mv oscam oscam6280.bak
mv oscam6295.bak oscam
./oscam -b
Done, your now using the latest oscam.
As mentioned, you should always back up your old oscam and keep it, any problems, revert back.
[edit] A note on the URL /tags/1.10/ oscam-1.10 after /1.10/space then oscam-1.10
