The dm500 can act as a server and will read the card, so you have no need for the ubuntu server yet.
One things for sure you will need a dish at your parents house, without that you wont receive the signal for the channels.
Here is a handy tool that will create the boxkey for you Dreambox Config Creator v0.9.5 by B16MCC.
If you still want to use the ubuntu then you will need a smargo to read the card.
Here is a simply guide on how to serve the card over the internet, Getting Started - Flines & Clines For Beginners. -

Hi All
i have been researching over the net for the past week about setting up a linux server and decided that my best bet was using ubuntu 10.04. now i just need help as there seems to be conflicting information about what you actually need, this is what i think you need can someone corrrect me if im wrong and guide me in teh right direction please:
1. desktop with linux on (mine will be ubuntu 10.04)I
2. Install SSH
3. Install FTP
4. instll APACHE
5. Install PHP
6 Install CCCAM(which version would you recommend and where can i download from)
Start by installing 2.1.4 you can download them from the emu section here
If you want to use 2.2.0 or 2.2.1 you must first update your server as in this guide
How to update debian/ ubuntu to cccam 2.20
now this is where i get confused:do i need a card reader - if so which one - i have read that smargo's are good with cccam but then i then get some sites saying that you can just use a dm500 which is on the same LAN.
I would recommend using a smargo but it is possible to use the dm500 on your local network. To do this you will also need to install either newcs or oscam to read the card in the dm500 and also on your cccam server. To make the card appear as local using this method you will need to use cccam version 2.1.3 on the server.
do i also need a sky dish at the location where the server.
The server will take its emm updates from the dish on your dm500, it is possible to recieve emm from your peers but depending on which card you are using not always advisable.Hope this helps.
i will be awaiting replies as i am going to start installing ubuntu in the next 20 mins i have already downloaded and created the bootable usb stick -
No m8 just leave that at 80..
The only thing you change is the "server listen port" in the cccam.cfg.
So you can set the port in the router to anything you want, say port 55555, doesnt have to be 12000 thats just an example everyone uses.
Just match the "server listen port" to the same as what you have openned in the router. -
Thanks jimc, this is the contents of the link incase it becomes unavailable in the future.
DM8000 HD - DM 800 HD HARD DISK HDD ISSUE (Gemini image 5.1)
You get that message when you hit the recording button :
Free Disk-size too small !!!
< 100MB
(in French " Espace libre disque trop petit <100Mb " )
even if you have correctly formatted a 2 Tb hard disk.Cause : The /media/hdd link does not point to the correct disk path
Solution :
Check first the video recording disk label
Hit the Blue Button, then select Peripheral Manager.
Press OK on the listed HDD instance. It will show the HD mounting point
Take note of that mounting point.
(for example, if the disk label is dmdisk, the mounting point is /media/dmdisk)Double check if the disk is properly mounted.
To do that within the Peripheral Manager, hit again the Blue button to enter the Menu.
Check if you have the "unmount" option only, which means that the disk is mounted.
(If you have the mount option only, select that option to mount the disk and don't forget to completely reboot your Dreambox after mounting the disk)Exit that menu to return to normal viewing.
Hit the MENU button on the RCU, then "Setup", "System" and finally "Recording path".
You will see that the bookmark is likely set to /hdd/movie.
Using the Bouquet up button, to go up in the file tree, navigate to /media/dmdisk
(change dmdisk according to your hdd label)
Save the bookmark and exit that menu. You should now be able to record programs normally.

Could you tell us which image you were using and how you did it so others can learn from this...
-
I would reflash using null modem cable & dreamup, takes the best part of an hour but should get you back to normal.

How to install within the file.

Is there a way to create a fully working usb image from my box.
I want it to have all softcams, plugins that are already installed.
It would be good to have it on a key.

Have a look HERE pal. -
As the title, how to create a backup of your VU+ Duo installed image. You can download the plugin from HERE
1. Download and extract to your desktop the attached enigma2-plugin-systemplugins-vuplus-nfibackup_1.1_pli_mipsel.ipk
2. FTP enigma2-plugin-systemplugins-vuplus-nfibackup_1.1_pli_mipsel.ipk to /tmp/
3. Open a telnet session to your VU+ Duo.
4. Install using the command below: -
5. Restart Enigma2.
6. Go to plugins and select VuPlus NFI-Backup.
7. A backup of your installed image will now be created in both .nfi and usb install formats. This will take a few minutes. NFI version will be in /media/hdd. The USB version will be in /media/hdd/vuplus/duo.
Now you can take a full 1:1 image backup of your installed images, mess around with other images & easilly re-flash your current image without having to go through all the setups again.
Enjoy, all credits go to the author of the plugin.
