Yeah, I'm in the process of trying to upgrade Spark. I think there might be something wrong with it, which is affecting the E2 side. Can't update online. Trying to figure out how to do it manually... Any ideas.

Thanks!
Did that and got this:
Collected errors:
* opkg_download: Failed to download http://ipkserver.hdmedia-universe.com/picons/Packages.gz, wget returned 1.
* opkg_download: Failed to download http://ipkserver.hdmedia-universe.com/skins/Packages.gz, wget returned 1.I rebooted and it's still not downloading anything from the repository.

Whenever i try to install plugins from the HDMU repository, I get an error telling me either the OPKG or the package index are corrupt, and suggests I should update the OPKG.
How do you update the OPKG. I'm using a Mac. Is it a telnet command? Is there any other way to do it? I'm having problems connecting with telnet in terminal.
Cheers

I tried setting this thing up from scratch and wasted a lot of time. After weeks of pricking around I loaded Scooterbunks image and - voila! - I finally discovered what E2 is all about.
Good luck!

Your previous posts state otherwise.Ever heard the saying you can't polish a turd. You can polish it as much as you like, but at the end of the day its still a turd.
All my other current Linux boxes and the other fifty or so i have had in the past ( I like to play with boxes, not just watch TV on them) say otherwise my friend :trbtjrjq:
I had problems setting it up in the beginning, but I think I would have had most of those problems with any box running E2. I used Spark while I was getting used to setting it up, so I'm glad I had it to fall back on. I've never owned any other linux boxes so can't compare, but the Alien works perfectly for my purposes. Sorry for rude/flippant post earlier. You'd know more than me about these boxes than me.

Well, i reckon i've got to stick with Spark. Works fine.
However i'd like to be able to tinker with the box a bit, and for that i need Enigma.
I'm confident that sometime in the future, there will be a stable enigma for the SH4 boxes.
Until then, i'll be patient.Have you tried loading Scooterbunk's HDMU backup image? All the plugins etc are set up. Trust me, when you will see how good it looks and how well it works you will not be interested in Spark. The only modifications I made to SB backup image was install HDDmanager to easily mount my HDD, and I made my own list of favourites with the remote (didn't bother with dreambox edit). Setup only took about twenty minutes and everything works perfectly. One thing - my box said Error when it had finished loading the image, but when I rebooted everything was fine.
Also, google Pogmothoin's set up guide - he runs through basic setup.

I've had an Alien 2 and i can categorically state it was the worst box i've ever had the misfortune to own. I'm sorry i have a hatred for this box and its flaky firmware I don't think the issue is with the remote, its with the box. The tin foil trick is just covering over the cracks, its not fixing the problem.
I've had an Alien SHD-8900 and an Alien 2. Both had the same remote. No issues on the SHD-8900 with either remote, I had the same problem with the Alien 2 as what you are having, so i am speaking from experience. I'm just glad i managed to send the pile of crap back to the seller and get my money back.
Just goes to show how bad the Alien 2 box is, Its a train wreck waiting to happen. Sorry to be brutal with the truth, but thats just the way it is. If you want a proper Enigma Linux based box that doesn't have the issues the Alien 2 has it has to have a MIPS CPU, not an SH4 one.
I have two receivers with SH4 chipsets, and neither are anywhere near to being close to my MIPS boxes for usability and function, and i doubt they ever will be. Unfortunately Enigma2 was written for MIPS, not SH4. To run on SH4 Enigma 2 has to be patched and modified, each fix causes a new set of problems which just make the firmware unstable in a different place. Thats why the boxes work well in Spark and are horrendous with Enigma. Spark was written from the ground up to work for the receiver, Enigma wasn't.
Nonsense. Box works fine. A bad workman…

My remote works fine. I did have really bad lag but I think the tuners might have been set up incorrectly and/or my external hard drive was not set up correctly (sorry, memory a bit crap). When you get it working the remote should be slightly (almost unnoticeably) slower than Spark. I have noticed that the skins slow it down a bit too, especially when switching from terrestrial channels, so I use the default skin. I found Satstation image useless with terrestrial channels, but HDMU handles them perfectly.

HFS+ are Linux compliant:
"The Linux kernel includes the hfsplus module[12] for mounting HFS+ filesystems read-write."
WikipediaSo just wondering if they should work with HDMU or any of the E2 images.
I think hfsplusprogs is a plugin that allows you format disks in HFS+ (but I'm not 100% sure about that), which should suggest it is an accepted format.
I'm a Mac man so ext formatted disks are useless for me.
Thanks

And what is the swap file thing about in HDD manager?
Cheers

Tommy T,
If you haven't got HDD manager plugin get that and install. I have been having trouble with my HD but installed that and was able to get it working easily. I am using a HDMU backup imageregards huester
Hi Huester
I downloaded HDD manager and it certainly makes things a lot simpler. One question though - is ext 3 and ext 4 the only formats an Alien 2 running E2 will accept? I was hoping to use my HD to keep juniour's movies on and use it as a media player...
What backup image are you using?
Cheers

Have you it configured to download epg daily, and set to open tv providers.
No! Can't get my ruddy hard disk to connect. I'm a Mac man so I don't have the same formatting options as PC users. Macs run on linux so you'd think it would be pretty straightforward...

I got that sorted thanks

That should be Horse and Country, but I like the typo

ok to get the tuners working you need to go to plugins and to settings and download reinhard.satellites.xml(1.0) this will give you all satellites. Also from plugins download from epg crossepg(0.6), then download oscam8110 (7.00) as that cams works. Any question how to setup crossepg etc just ask. Oscam may not matter to you if you just want freeview. To install hard drive look at the link below for this image
http://linuxsat-support.com/am…mage-amiko-alien-2-a.html
use the telnet way.
Its a very good image once all installed.
Hi Bobby
I'll take you up on your offer to help set up crossepg please. I'm running HDMU and have my HDD set up (eventually!). I have crossepg working at the moment, but it's using internal memory and some channels, like Hore and Country (don't blame me that what the girlfriend is into) aren't getting their epgs properly. Any advice would be welcome.

Can anyone recommend a good external HDD that works with the Alien 2? Preferably self powered. I'm looking at WESTERN DIGITAL My Passport Portable Hard Drive.
Alternatively, has anyone tried connecting a NAS box via ethernet? If so, did it work, and with what image?
-
Don't stab your girlfriend, just the person who sold it the alien to you lol.
These are not good beginner boxes if you wish to use E2. This is never made obvious when they are sold. Most retailers just want your money and thats it. Where did you buy it from?
Nano
I bought it mail order in Ireland off a company called EireTV because they were one of the few places that sell them that have an actual shop. I spoke to a salesman on the phone before I bought it and found him very up front. I was going to buy an alien from one of the bigger seller of boxes in Ireland (won't mention any names) and found them a bit dodgy. Since buying the box I returned a faulty usb wifi dongle and they replaced it without questions. All in all I am very happy with EireTV's service.

If I wanted an easy life I'd get rid of the girlfriend and the box!
Thanks Ben I got that the ftp working.

Latest satstation image. HDMU kept crashing on me.

The biggest problem I have with setting up this box (and probably all enigma2 boxes) is getting information. You search and search and you find fragments here and there and you have to piece it all together. Look at the plugins page for example - most of them don't even say what the plugins do!
