Yeah, I'm in the process of trying to upgrade Spark. I think there might be something wrong with it, which is affecting the E2 side. Can't update online. Trying to figure out how to do it manually... Any ideas.

Whenever i try to install plugins from the HDMU repository, I get an error telling me either the OPKG or the package index are corrupt, and suggests I should update the OPKG.

How do you update the OPKG. I'm using a Mac. Is it a telnet command? Is there any other way to do it? I'm having problems connecting with telnet in terminal.

    Cheers

:10lol: Your previous posts state otherwise.

Ever heard the saying you can't polish a turd. You can polish it as much as you like, but at the end of the day its still a turd.

All my other current Linux boxes and the other fifty or so i have had in the past ( I like to play with boxes, not just watch TV on them) say otherwise my friend :trbtjrjq:

I had problems setting it up in the beginning, but I think I would have had most of those problems with any box running E2. I used Spark while I was getting used to setting it up, so I'm glad I had it to fall back on. I've never owned any other linux boxes so can't compare, but the Alien works perfectly for my purposes. Sorry for rude/flippant post earlier. You'd know more than me about these boxes than me.

Well, i reckon i've got to stick with Spark. Works fine.
However i'd like to be able to tinker with the box a bit, and for that i need Enigma.
I'm confident that sometime in the future, there will be a stable enigma for the SH4 boxes.
    Until then, i'll be patient.

Have you tried loading Scooterbunk's HDMU backup image? All the plugins etc are set up. Trust me, when you will see how good it looks and how well it works you will not be interested in Spark. The only modifications I made to SB backup image was install HDDmanager to easily mount my HDD, and I made my own list of favourites with the remote (didn't bother with dreambox edit). Setup only took about twenty minutes and everything works perfectly. One thing - my box said Error when it had finished loading the image, but when I rebooted everything was fine.

Also, google Pogmothoin's set up guide - he runs through basic setup.

Nonsense. Box works fine. A bad workman…

My remote works fine. I did have really bad lag but I think the tuners might have been set up incorrectly and/or my external hard drive was not set up correctly (sorry, memory a bit crap). When you get it working the remote should be slightly (almost unnoticeably) slower than Spark. I have noticed that the skins slow it down a bit too, especially when switching from terrestrial channels, so I use the default skin. I found Satstation image useless with terrestrial channels, but HDMU handles them perfectly.

    HFS+ are Linux compliant:
"The Linux kernel includes the hfsplus module[12] for mounting HFS+ filesystems read-write."
    Wikipedia

So just wondering if they should work with HDMU or any of the E2 images.

I think hfsplusprogs is a plugin that allows you format disks in HFS+ (but I'm not 100% sure about that), which should suggest it is an accepted format.

I'm a Mac man so ext formatted disks are useless for me.

    Thanks

    Tommy T,
If you haven't got HDD manager plugin get that and install. I have been having trouble with my HD but installed that and was able to get it working easily. I am using a HDMU backup image

    regards huester

    Hi Huester

I downloaded HDD manager and it certainly makes things a lot simpler. One question though - is ext 3 and ext 4 the only formats an Alien 2 running E2 will accept? I was hoping to use my HD to keep juniour's movies on and use it as a media player...

What backup image are you using?

    Cheers

    Hi Bobby
I'll take you up on your offer to help set up crossepg please. I'm running HDMU and have my HDD set up (eventually!). I have crossepg working at the moment, but it's using internal memory and some channels, like Hore and Country (don't blame me that what the girlfriend is into) aren't getting their epgs properly. Any advice would be welcome.
    Cheers

Can anyone recommend a good external HDD that works with the Alien 2? Preferably self powered. I'm looking at WESTERN DIGITAL My Passport Portable Hard Drive.

Alternatively, has anyone tried connecting a NAS box via ethernet? If so, did it work, and with what image?

Don't stab your girlfriend, just the person who sold it the alien to you lol.

These are not good beginner boxes if you wish to use E2. This is never made obvious when they are sold. Most retailers just want your money and thats it. Where did you buy it from?

    Nano

I bought it mail order in Ireland off a company called EireTV because they were one of the few places that sell them that have an actual shop. I spoke to a salesman on the phone before I bought it and found him very up front. I was going to buy an alien from one of the bigger seller of boxes in Ireland (won't mention any names) and found them a bit dodgy. Since buying the box I returned a faulty usb wifi dongle and they replaced it without questions. All in all I am very happy with EireTV's service.

The biggest problem I have with setting up this box (and probably all enigma2 boxes) is getting information. You search and search and you find fragments here and there and you have to piece it all together. Look at the plugins page for example - most of them don't even say what the plugins do!
