Having broken my old TM7102 I have now purchased a VU+Solo 2. I have downloaded all the relevant satellite channels using blackhole but cannot get the card readers to work?
I am not interested in card share but understand that i will have to ftp a bh tgz file to the tmp folder to achieve this. Is this the only way to achieve my objective.

You need either a cam for your card (depending on which card/platform you have) or a softcam like Oscam to be able to read the card.
if you install our ADDONS panel plugin it will cover most of your needs, like emulators,channel settings,picons,etc :
You FTP the IPK over to var/volatile/tmp folder then on remote press green-yellow to manually install iPK
