you can use teh HDD easily enough use a program like easues partition manager and make 2 partuitions on teh HDD
if you have a 4 gig usb stick then say 4igig partition as partition1 n what eva left as partion 2 name 1 as USB n 2 AS HDDthen you will see em both via the stb via same processs as before , off course you can dump what on the USB TICK to partion1 USB on the usb HDD with 2 partions program also been posted by myself on here partion prog i gave above:)

The hdd would need to be spinning constantly for the picon to show instantly.
If its been idle, it will take a second or two to show the picon before the hdd gets going.
USB or internal flash (if you`ve got enough flash memory) is best location.
EPG data would be fine for the HDD. -

Ladder, I've a combo model os-mini with hdd attached at rear.
Epg on hdd and picons on flash without any issue.
Has basic plugins installed as well, and still loads of free flash.
All runs smooth.

Or simply use a powered USB hub connected to the rear port and attach everything, like an USB stick and a HDD.
