Cheap and good quality VPN for unlimited number of devices and it works easily in E2 with YIFY etc.

  • I just bought Surfshark VPN services, as they allow unlimited number of devices to be connected and they are dirt cheap, plus speeds are great with IKEv2 encryption for PCs/laptops and devices that support it!

In our boxes I used OpenVPN plugin with Surfshark details and that was enough to use YIFY-FNC with the original YIFY link! Two texts below were edited a bit by yours truly...;)

    "Surfshark on Enigma2 with OpenVPN

If you’re here to learn how to set up Surfshark VPN on your Enigma2 powered set top box, read How To Setup NordVPN on Enigma2. The setup is exactly the same, with one small difference. For NordVPN you use the same login and password as for your apps, whereas Surfshark provides you with separate login and password for OpenVPN connection. Just use them in your password.conf file and you should be good.

If you don’t know where to find your OpenVPN credentials, go to Manual connection guide on the Apps page, but in order to see them you need to be logged in."

    https://satellitedirect4u.com/…nordvpn-on-enigma2-boxes/

    "What you need:

    Notepad++ – download it from https://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/v7.5.6.html

VPN config file – download it from your VPN provider

    Enigma2 powered box

    Valid VPN subscription

FTP client – I use Filezilla

    Telnet client, SSH or PuTTY

    Preparing the files for upload

Once you downloaded and installed all software you need, unzip VPN config.zip and open any ovpn file with Notepad++. Look for line auth-user-pass (around line 31) and change it to

    auth-user-pass password.conf

    then save your file as

    client.conf

It is very important to do this after opening the file. If you rename the ovpn file before opening in Notepad++ you may corrupt it and make unusable.

Next, open a brand new, "clean/empty" file in Notepad++ and insert/paste your VPN login details like so:

    your@email.com

    yourpassword

(Note, as above: YOU DO NOT USE THESE BUT THE DETAILS SURFSHARK GAVE YOU WHEN YOU WERE DOWNLOADING OVPN FILES - USERNAME AND PASSWORD given to you by Surfshark! [gorski's comment])

    Then save this file as

    password.conf

Using Filezilla or any other FTP client make openvpn folder in /etc folder and then upload both files client.conf and password.conf to your box to /etc/openvpn folder and reboot the box.

Next run OpenVPN app by pressing MENU > Setup > System > Network > OpenVPN setup, then activate it and hit start button. Your IP should now change to the location you edited server for.

I.e. for any uk server edit any file starting with uk like so:

    uk368.nordvpn.com.tcp443.ovpn – for TCP port 443 or

uk367.nordvpn.com.udp1194.ovpn – for UDP port 1194 (more stable in my opinion)

Now run PuTTY or SSH, log in to your box and check your ip using this command:

    Code
    wget -qO- http://ipecho.net/plain;echo

Stop running OpenVPN on your box and check your IP again, if it’s different than previous one that means your setup is correct.

In PurE2 you can check your home network and public IP address by going to MENU > pManager > Network > General Network Info.

You should see something like 192.168.xxx.x for home network (local and Gateway addresses are usually in this format/range) and

Public IP address must be different than the one you get from your provider if OpenVPN is working.

Also, you should have an additional Gateway and Public IP address, quite different from your usual local address format/range, like 10.8.8.x

    Final note:

For better stability you can put:

    auth-retry nointeract

    exactly below

    auth-user-pass password.conf

    in your client.conf file.

Also if you spot any issues add that:

    log /etc/openvpn/openvpn.log

around line 40 or so and you would be able to see the logs and know straight away what’s going on."

    Hope it helps... ;)

  • If one doesn't have any spare dosh, here are some free VPNs, so combine them, change them every few days or even every day, if you must, when you reach the limit or if their performance is not up to scratch... ;)

How to choose a free VPN: 5 must-ask questions

The last 12 months have witnessed the rise of global threats to individual privacy with long maintained rights to anonymity and net neutrality being undermined with a cloak of legitimacy.

While VPN - virtual private networks - are not the panacea to being safe, secure and private on the internet, it is an essential component of the arsenal for individuals inclined to seek these liberties.

If you don’t have a VPN yet, you can grab one for free, without having to pay a single penny for one. Just be careful though as not all free VPN providers are created equal and some might even compromise your security.

Here are five questions you need to ask yourself before you download and install one.

    1. What is its business model? VPN providers are in for the money and running such a business does cost a lot especially if it is a popular one. Some, like Tunnelbear, will use free, just like Dropbox, as a marketing tool to entice potential customers to move to a paid version once they are happy with the free one. Most however will sell user data or provide a something to a third party that will, again, compromise your privacy.

    2. How does it protect my PC? Most VPN providers usually use a desktop application that runs in the background encrypting your data while you surf the web. However, that’s only solves part of the problem. Your laptop can still be fingerprinted because of the permissiveness of tracking solutions that can be found on almost all websites online. A few, including WIndscribe, have a more holistic approach by integrating the equivalent of a super ad-blocker

    3. What do I lose by going free? Usually one can expect a free product to have some corners cut and that is indeed the case for all VPN providers. Some offer more free bandwidth than others, major locations and even ad blocking, P2P and firewall with an easy paid for upgrade path that unlocks unlimited bandwidth with more locations and OpenVPN Configs.

    4. Does your provider log anything? Make sure that your provider doesn’t store users’ internet activity. You can usually check that in the terms and conditions page or the end user license agreement, commonly known as EULA. Sadly, a lot of VPN providers prefer to frustrate end users with long T&Cs or privacy statements that often hide significant details about how they operate. On the other end of the spectrum are VPN providers that will erase everything after your session closes and don’t keep logs.

    5. Can I sign up completely anonymously? Having a VPN provider that you can subscribe to without an email address and one that accepts Bitcoin payments, for maximum privacy, is pretty much the best you can expect online. Some providers also offer double hopping where you can obfuscate your traffic further by essentially doubling down on privacy.

    Best Free VPNs

    1. ExpressVPN – Ideal if you’re traveling for less than a month or want to experiment with VPNs
    2. Hotspot ShieldStable, fast, established VPN if you don’t need streaming
    3. TunnelBear – Solid choice if you’re security conscious and don’t need a lot of data
    4. Windscribe – Ideal if you love streaming and don’t mind waiting while it buffers
    5. hide.me – Good choice if you don’t need your VPN for torrenting
    6. Proton– Secure VPN with unlimited data but no torrenting
    7. Opera – Great free VPN but only works in-browser

“An Anonymous VPN Service created by pro-privacy supporters of Net Neutrality to ensure your online privacy.”

Using state-of-the art encryption technologies such as AES-256, freevpn.me routes your traffic through a an encrypted tunnel between you and the world wide web, hiding your real IP address to ensure you maintain privacy and protection online from your ISP, hackers, ID thieves and to defeat government censorship.

Not sure if the initial handshake is static (on any of the above) and easy to decrypt for those in the know but...

  • I forgot, generally speaking - in your PC/lap (with Winblows)/Mac/Android/Linux whatever, if you only need some anonymity while browsing or unlocking some websites etc. - use Tor browser!!!

  • im abit stuck ive followed this guide step by step i have a VPN subscription with surfshark once i get to the actual part of starting the VPN on my set top box via openvpn i lose all internet connection and when i switch off the VPN i get my internet back? any reason for this problem ?

  • Hi. I have followed Gorski's instructions on installing Surfshark VPN on my Zgemma. I have followed this step-by-step but I cannot get this to work.

I have added my client.conf & password.conf to /etc/openvpn and rebooted. When I go into OpenVPN Setup, I can set Autostart to "enabled", and when I press the green button (start), it shows current status as running. All good so far.

Then I press the exit button on my remote to get out of the OpenVPN setup. The problem is that when I go back into OpenVPN setup, Current Status shows as "stopped". When I press the green button to restart, nothing happens, it stays on "stopped". If I play around by switching Autostart off then on again, then restarting, I can get it running.

Whilst the OpenVPN screen is open, showing the VPN service as "running", I then tried Putty and the wget -qO- http://ipecho.net/plain;echo command. It shows my IP address to be the same, whether OpenVPN is running or not running.

I've followed the instructions but something is clearly wrong. Has anyone else had any success with this and who could possibly help me set up Surfshark VPN on my OpenATV based Zgemma box? Many thanks.

  • Try PurE2, m8. And good luck!

On hols now, can't do more...

  • Can you post your files here but without yout private details?

What is their extension? Did you edit and save them correctly?

Using the special username/password given by your VPN?

One must be a bit patient 'till it starts...

If your box is weak (SoC/RAM), that might be the issue.

We must examine all the parts of the setup...

  • Followed just how you instructed

Downloaded server file UDP type opened, added the password.conf line, saved the file as client.conf

Created a new file added my username and password from the bottom of the config files page saved as password.conf

FTP both files to etc/openvpn then rebooted my box

Started the vpn via openvpn but when I do I lose all internet access to my box, to check I run the line in putty to see what my IP but nothing pops up, stopping the vpn regains my internet access and my IP address is visible again I have no idea where I'm going wrong here

I'm on a zgemma h7s running pure2 using UK config files the guys at surfshark are completely lost and cant help neither

  • For instance, in Notepad++, once finished editing a file one goes to Save as, one uses a drop-down menu, to choose Any/all file (writing from memory, from a swimming pool side...), not to get the .txt extension. Then, 'save as' the relevant .conf file...

  • "Created a new file added my username and password from the bottom of the config files page saved as password.conf"

Not the ones which are in config files but the ones you saw on the screen of your PC when you registered with Surfshark, not the username/pass you created but the ones you were given by them.

It can be retrieved from Surfshark's website, when you log into your account... dig... ;)

  • I don't recall being given any user or pass

But I'm not using my email and pass I'm using the credentials they give you for a manual set up long series of letters and numbers

I'm setting everything up as normal right ? See any anomalies ?

  • Suspect 18, same as me, I am not using my Surfshark Username & Password that they issued for my VPN that I use on my laptop, or the one I use to log into the Surfshark website (same one). I too am using the credentials below the OVPNs for manual set up.

I tried changing Nameserver settings to 8.8.8.8. and 8.8.4.4 , but when I reboot, it is back to the standard I.P. address.

Wish I had not gone with Surfshark

  • its frustrating carrspaints but it's got to be something were doing wrong even the slightest wrong line or word can make it fail

Surfshark is recommended and used by gorski himself he has it up running on his set top box so it definitely works it's the figuring out part

If worst comes to worst surfshark offer a money back guarantee so that's neat

  • Writing mostly from memory, since I am on hols and I only have my laptop with me...

PurE2: check your STB's IP address via pManager > Network... - it should be the normal IP address exactly the same as your PC's IP address, given to you by your IP provider (note it down for reference).

From PurE2 > System > Setup > Network > you need to download OpenVPN plugin.

Then, prepare your SurfShark files as described above, from ovpn file given to you by SurfShark...

Here is the end result, my client.conf (minus the bits that one is not to show publicly) - please make sure you do it exactly as described above by opening an ovpn file using Notepad++, then editing it as below (with your full bits, obviously, not the way I am demonstrating it below, since I have changed some bits with XXXX):

And here is my password.conf containing my edited username and password - they are given to you when you create an account with Sufshark:

    Code
    XXxXXXxxxxxXxXXXXxxxxXXX
    xXXXXxxXXXXXxxxxXXXXXxxx

I have my email and password, which I have chosen and I use it to log into Surfshark VPN PC SW and Surfshark website but they are obviously different, for instance:
    gorski@someemail.com
    frmeGThus89&*%{%$£}

Once edited go to Notepad++ > File > Save As... > Save as type (drop down menu) > All types > client.conf (and password.conf) > Save.

Start FileZilla Client on your PC > connect it to your STB > choose etc folder > right click on it > Create directory > write "openvpn" (without the "" signs) > OK. Now, right click on it > Attributes to > 755. Close FZC (confirm to close if needed). (From experience I would advise you to close it to make sure you will see the changes you made.) Start FZC, connect to your STB and find the new folder, open it/get inside it.

Now, send the 2 files just created on your PC ==> into openvpn folder in your STB. Give them attributes to 644 and confirm if needed.

    Reboot your STB.

Once up, go to System > Setup > Network > OpenVPN plugin and start the plugin, plus make it autoconnect/autostart on E2 reboot, if you wish it so... Hit the Exit button a few times...

You must be patient at this point. If you have done it all correctly eventually you will be connected to OpenVPN SurfShark. First sign to watch out for is loss of a TV channel image, if you were on CS. Usually, this happens when you lose the connection that is typical, before you have gained a VPN connection. Once it is up again - it should be "it"... You should see colours on your TV again... via your VPN, not your ISP's network!

If it doesn't work, you may need to reboot your STB with the VPN plugin running/on autostart...

Now, check your STB's IP address via pManager > Network... again...

Once you connect to VPN Surfshark your IP address will change to 2 types:

VPN's internal network which looks like 10.x...

usual IP address of the VPN server (for London it starts with 5.xxx...) - usually quite different from one's normal IP address given to one by one's ISP (which you have noted above for reference - use it to check it now).

It's safe to CS or stream now... ;) And it is possible to watch YIFY-FNC, for instance. Don't forget to tip the coder, then send him a PM with your name/donation details, so you get your KUD number for higher resolutions... :)

When I get back home and I get a chance, I shall check all this and edit this little "How to" but overall this should be enough...

    Good luck! :)

  • I followed everything gorski everything went according to plan up until the loss of tv image, I've lost the image but it just hasn't come back on

    I'm so bamboozled by this

Side note too when you said save the client and password files as save as drop the menu and click all there was no options for all just a bunch of different file types no all

  • Try a different VPN (free), see if that works...

I tried SurfShark VPN with many of their servers around EU and wider (have you tried various ones?), with Virgin and BT as main ISPs, at various addresses and it worked in various boxes.... I even gave a box to a friend and it worked there, too...

When it didn't work I would restart STB and it would work...

    Modem/router issues, maybe?
