  • Greetings all,

    I am having a problem from the first time I started to use Enigma2 receivers. But now I got time to do something about it.

    The problem is that OpenATV/OpenPLI with all its versions is unable to play External Arabic Subtitles correctly 100%.

    I changed thousands of skins, and tried hundreds of font types for replacement ( Arial, TimesnewRoman, Custom fonts for arabic language) but still the same.

    Please note: Kodi plays the subtitles without any problem.

    Can someone elaborate please ? I don't think its a skin or font problem. Maybe encoding ?

    Best Regards,

    Is this problem with all OpenAlliance images or only OpenATV/OpenPli

    It looks like the subtitle screen is not in same format as the rest of the screen

    Example skins is FullHD 1920x1080 but the subtitle screen is only 1280x720

  • fonts are declared in the the skins skin.xml file. Which will over rule any default skin elements.

    <font name="Subtitlefont" filename="/usr/share/fonts/nmsbd.ttf" scale="100"/>

    <font name="Replacement" filename="/usr/share/fonts/ae_AlMateen.ttf" scale="100" replacement="1"/>

    there is also a screen called "SubtitleDisplay" I think has some relevance.

    I always have this set as this in my skins

    <screen name="SubtitleDisplay" position="0,0" size="1920,1080" zPosition="-2" flags="wfNoBorder" backgroundColor="transparent" />

    there is also another screen called

    <screen name="Subtitles" position="0,0" size="1920,1080" backgroundColor="transparent" flags="wfNoBorder" zPosition="-1">

    to be honest I don't know if those screens are still true. It was a while ago I created my own skins.

    Then obviously you have the settings.

    Yellow button > left

    turn on subtitles - exit

    yellow button > left > red button (quick subtitle menu)

    you also have the main subtitle settings

    Menu > setup > audio > Subtitle settings

    Do any of my skins display it correctly.
    And what does openatv default skin show - surely that is correct.

    I tried All OpenAlliance images PureE2/OpenATV/OpenPLI/OpenSPA same problem.

    I prefer openATV always my main image.

    Also I use metrixHD skin with Full HD skin resolution.

    How can I change subtitle resolution ?

  • Hi Mate,

    I tried all your skins its the same, some letters in arabic words are seperated in subtitles.

    I can't find those lines you mentioned above screen name Subtitle display in the skin.xml file.

    Are you sure they still there ?

    You write by the way "External subtitles" maybe explain a bit more about this?

    Are you refering to plugin SubsSupport where you download and overlay subtitles?

    Also do you have the same issue as already asked by KiddaC with the skin default?

    Try an HD skin instead of a FullHD and see if the problem still is there?

    I don't use any plugins for subtitles.

    By external subtitles I mean .srt files downloaded with the movie.

    Also embedded arabic subtitles have the same problem.

    Tried all KiddaC skins still the same.

    Problem with arabic letters I think its an encoding problem.

    What do you think ?

  • my skins use the default replacement font. Which is a big ugly thing.

    <font name="Replacement" filename="/usr/share/fonts/ae_AlMateen.ttf" scale="100" replacement="1"/>

    try this font (which is the font I use for xstreamity and should be fine for arabic)

    had to zip it to upload, so needs unzipping.

    copy it to /usr/share/fonts/

    then in your skins skin.xml

    change the replacement font to that new file

    i.e.

    <font name="Replacement" filename="/usr/share/fonts/m-plus-rounded-1c-regular.ttf" scale="100" replacement="1"/>

  • Yeah I tried the font you uploaded above, now no arabic at all.

    I literally tried all fonts on the Internet xD, I fount that the best one for arabic is Arial, I changed it in the replacement since that time.

    But this problem where the arabic word's letters are seperated its an another thing.

    VLC uses arial font and plays subtitle very well, I made enigma2 use also the same font but the same issue.

    Any help if I can change encoding maybe of arabic subtitles ?

    Kodi plays them perfectly how is that ?????

    It's the placement of the subtitle you have the issue with? Text in it self is okey? or at least looks ok to me but then of cause i cant read Arabic ;)

    Ok man I will give you small example.

    This word in arabic: ايضا means "too"

    The problem is that this word in the subtitles is being displayed : ايض ا

    The main problem is when you find a letter with an arabic symbol like the highlighted one it makes the word seperate.

    Yes then the problem is the encoding of your .srt files and you need SubsSupport plugin to play them correct.

    Kodi can handle all types of .srt files where Enigma2 in general needs some help to convert them proper.

    Try and install SubsSupport and load the .srt file from there and see if this does not fix your problem
