I have an old but good gigablue quad plus but it doesn't boot every time now. When it doesn't boot the hard drive can be heard clicking. A simple on-off on the back sorts the problem out. My question is can a tired hard drive make an Enigma 2 box go “faulty”

Might be PSU not supplying enough power.
I can't answer for definite about the HDD, but you could unplug it and use a USB/flash device.

Just an update got a new power brick and swapped it over. The box is working perfectly.
Thanks for your help.
Now I have a question about the hard drive, I want to swap the mechanical hdd for an ssd, can I simply swap the hdd or is it best to reflash the box and start again?

Yes u can I use a ssd in my untino4k

Contents of HDD are independent of image. If you swap the HDD, there is no need to reflash image. After you add the HDD, format (Linux term is initialise) it in ext file system if it is staying in box.
There are barely any gains in using an SSD on an Enigma2 receiver. Don't change it for sake of change. Lower power consumption, noise, and speed for ad-hoc searches are probably only gains.

I was able to swap out the 750gb mecha GB mechanical drive for the 480 gb ssd
The swap was very simple to do. All did was unscrew the old drive and screw in the new one.
Rebooted the box and initialise he hdd and every thing worked well.

On a side note i got a spare sat tuner also fitted at the same time.
