System backup restore from USB in recovery menu not working

  • I have a problem with restoring a system backup from a USB stick. I’m currently running OpenATV 7.5. I create a system backup, which is saved as a ZIP file in the images folder on the USB stick. I’ve tried two USB sticks, one 2GB and one 32GB, both formatted in FAT32. Unfortunately, in the recovery menu the image is not detected in the USB Multiboot Image Upgrade option — I get the message: No image found on the USB storage device.

However, from within the system, in the online update menu, there is a backup section where the backup I created is visible and works fine, since I was able to restore it to a second slot. But this option only works if the system is still running. I would like to have the possibility to restore the system from the recovery menu in case the system completely crashes.

Both USB sticks are working fine — I used the same ones on a Zgemma H9SSE receiver, and restoring backups worked there.

you need to rename the file from_usb.zip to _mmc.zip

you need to rename the file from_usb.zip to _mmc.zip

Unfortunately it still doesn’t work, I renamed the file to _mmc.zip and I’m still getting the same message: "No image found on the USB storage device"

  • put USB-Stick with the zip backup (do not unzip) in rear USB Slot

    start OpenATV

    go to Menu>>Settings>>Software>> Management>>Flash online

now you should see a list, open the list choose the Backup Image zip, use slot of your choice and install it

    °Never change a running system°

  • As I already wrote above, I know there is a possibility to use the backup directly from within the OpenATV system. But what if the system completely freezes and cannot be started at all? In that case, I would need to restore the backup from the recovery menu, but this doesn’t work for me — it doesn’t find the image.

  • The method described by cologno49 in post #2 is correct and should work. Maybe you are making a mistake in the renaming?

If everything is correct, but the issue still persists, you will need to install your backup file using a trick.

Download the most recent version of OpenATV (_mmc.zip) and install it in a third slot using the "USB Multiboot Image Upgrade" functionality.

There's no need to set up OpenATV; you only need it to install your backup. After that, you can delete it.

    Edit

I just read that you are placing the backup file in the /images folder.

Wrong. You need to put it in the root of the USB stick and rename it to _mmc.zip.

  • I downloaded a clean OpenATV image. I tried flashing it directly in the root directory with the name _mmc.zip, I also tried placing it inside the images folder, then in image, but I still get the same message: “No image found on the USB storage device.” So even flashing a clean image is a problem. I used 3 different USB sticks, and none of them are detected.

  • Try to install an image (OpenATV) from the menu option "Network Multiboot Image Upgrade".

You will need to use a cable to connect your box to the router via LAN, otherwise it won’t work.

If you still don’t succeed, then you’ll need to install a Recovery Image (in Slot1 by default), but you will lose the other slots as well.

Afterwards, you can restore the backup images.

It’s always some kind of solution, but I’m a supporter of the idea that if something is supposed to work – it should work. Well, maybe a solution will come up eventually.
