  • dont bother with those eagles mate in my opinion ! you will be disappointed ¬ avoid spiderbox too if you really ask me ! Budget will of course be a concern ! get yourself a VU+ uno or solo ¬ You'll never ask yourself what if - Just save a a few weeks longer ¬ The result will be satisfactory !

Of course there are other clone type enigma2 boxes available too i just think the eagle is very basic sorry to sound miserable or big headed !

Yes its easy to set up tere is plenty of online support !
Not sure about two tv's tough -
possiby with a video sender but i dont think it has RF output !
none the less its a cheap bargain in terms of starting out and HD

  • would agree with rikjaard mate - i had the mini version of this box and to put it in my own word "fookin pile of shite" but hey each to their own - save up a little more get a better box like solo

  • This box really trades off the back of its earlier conception ¬ The eagle box ! Which was a clone dreambox500 sold by alsat and coded by a fella called anrak i think ¬ summit like that !
it was and still is a good clone But its not HD ¬ the newer eagle box hd is a slightly better built openbox imo !

still at the bargain prices you can get them for i understand the HD temptation ! great to start out on and in (kids) bedrooms !

  • I think the concept you are both missing is the EagleBox are £45-£49 which to many is the bottom line... Is it the perfect HD receiver? Probably not, is it perhaps the best value HD receiver in the UK? Probably.

There is no doubt that the Linux Enigma2 HD based receivers are going to give the user a far greater experience and you are both right they are well worth the extra money, but it's a considerable amount of money to jump to £179 for an original VU+ SOLO - if you've got the money then go for it (also consider NewDVB 800 and 800SE - better value than the SOLO and great support), if you've not then I can assure you we have hundreds, probably thousands of happy EagleBox owners, they will never be in the same league as Enigma2 based HD receivers, but neither will the price, you need to make the choice based on price, features and support, and I dare say who is providing the hardware and what service, support and backup they give. :)~

  • i think the problem we all got ere is the fact that majority of us have a E2 box to compare it against which isnt really fair to the box itself - for the price its a box that does the job at a really low price but as the saying goes u get what to pay for

  • Have to agree with Sat Shop on this one. If your comparing it with an E2 box you are going to be disappointed as it won't be as flexible as an E2 box due to the software limitations.

I have a Ferguson Ariva 102e which like the Eaglebox is excellent value for money. i paid an extra £10 for the Ariva purely for the fact i though the box itself looked better than the Eaglebox, although i will probably be buying an Eagle box for my sons room if the price doesn't go up.

Its at most only £49 so its worth the punt. If its anywhere near as good as the Ariva it will be money well spent.

in my first reply i clearly stated the quotes below

Budget will of course be a concern.............none the less its a cheap bargain in terms of starting out and HD

    second post ¬

still at the bargain prices you can get them for i understand the HD temptation ! great to start out on and in (kids) bedrooms !

Again though it is actually worth Stating the price £45-£49 - which is an absolute steal for any set top box right ¬ Geee what do Freesat Grundig or alba boxs retail for in places like Argos and curries ? Bless

  • Couldn't agree more with the above, it really does boil down to you get what you pay for, as an enthusiast myself I'd find it hard to sugest anything other than an E2 receiver of some kind, especially from your average UK users point of view, but then again we've had this conversation so many times with customers on the phone or at the shop which we try to sell them the benefits of what extras you'll be getting with E2, some go for it, some don't and end up back a few weeks later saying you were right, some just plain don't believe us and then there are many that are more than happy with what they get for the £49 or so.... They are great value, but you are totally correct, you get what you pay for - but at the end of the day as my mate at the shop often quotes, he who uses, chooses!. :)

  • If you just want to watch tv its fine but the other boxes offer much more streaming and countless addons and can be adapted to your own tastesand are more future proofed eagle hd will be supported for an initial period then be superceeded by something new so support dries up or moves on thats the name of the game

  • I have one and I am not at all impressed with it, I'm selling it on as it's useless to me. There are better boxes at this price point which do work with "the most popular emulator", the Eaglebox HD currently does not, despite aggressive assertions on other forums from distributors of this box who would have you believe that the box is perfect but all the servers are at fault, although these servers work with all other boxes. It probably just needs a firmware update but this has been needed for nearly 6 months now and does not seem to be forthcoming.
I can pretty much sum up the spirit of the official support when this issue comes up.. "We are not allowed to talk about that on here but if it's not working, contact your server, it's them at fault, not the box, if you don't like it, tough"..

  • Wanting to add to this as i have had the Eaglebox HD mini. I had it for less than 2 months before I sold it. It is right to say that if you have been using an E2 receiver, then you will probably not like this, but again it is priced right now. When I bought it, there was some 'confusion' over the specs of the receiver, such as the fact it was advertised as being able to store 8000 channels, which apparently is the case before you flash it with 'third party' firmware, then it goes down to 4000 (might be 5000 now) - not sure if anyone has proven this as everyone flashes with the latest firmware when they get the box. Also it was advertised as being capable of streaming to it, as well as other suspect claims, which eventually got amended with the excuse that these claims were a 'mistake'. These were the manufacturer specs so in no way were sat-shop or other stockists at fault for this. I had 4 USB hard drives, and out of these, only one would work with this receiver. After posting my findings on a particular forum close to this receiver (you know the one!) - I got sent to coventry, so something was under hand here!!!

Also, the PVR and timeshift functions are very basic and don't work well with HD channels at all. The manual states the limitations of this function, but at the time I purchased the receiver, this wasn't mentioned again in the specs.

As you could imagine I was pretty peeved off that this cost me £85 quid, and i got about 45 on fleabay when i sold it. I think £85 quid reflected what it claimed to be capable of, and £45 quid reflects what it is capable of.

As for the server issue - I had a line from my internal server running to this receiver and yes there were issues, so I would suggest there may well be an issue with that side of things too - but if anyone is using a payserver at all then they will always leave themselves open to the "it is a server issue" comment - and rightly so - cause it often will be.

This receiver is what it is, so long as you know what it is, and although I agree it is worth £45 easily , I disagree that it is the best value. I think it is correctly priced.

I reckon the best value box out there at the moment is the Amiko Alien 2 HD - a steal at £149 from our sponsor.

the Eaglebox - Definitely worth £45 - definitely never was worth £85.

If I take a while to respond, you can see why.....

  • I bought the Eagle Mini along with a Vu Duo so I could ditch my Sly box in the living room and put the Eagle in my son's room then I didn't have to watch the crap he sometimes watched. As the last box I played with was a Technomate 6900 HD the Vu Duo was a big linux learning curve, I have not posted much on here but I have read loads and the Duo does more than I expected, as for the Eagle Mini it was cheap and I paid £70 not £45 it sits in my sons bedroom, I gave it an nline from the Duo and it does exactly what I wanted it to do, no frills but it does the job, have not had a problem, it records to a 2.5in Segate drive with no issues. Only thing my son complained of was a noisey fan so I told him to up his TV volume job sorted. Bottom line is the Eagle is cheap but it did the job I bought it for.

  • Great reading and have to agree i bought hd eaglebox expecting the same quality as the sd version i have had and sold to others for years and am very disapointed (actually thought it was linux) should have read about it first. I still cant get it to connect (bought 3 boxes) well pissed off....

  • Use N: Line connection protocol in CCcam - i understand that works better than C: Line protocol - Although i have never tried or tested that theory !

You are correct N: Line works fine, I have tried and tested this with the Aquila April Firmware :)

  • in my humble opinion if you want a cheap reliable sat receiver a ***box F3 is the one if you want to pay out a bit more for a bit of decent quality a blade 7000s would be my choice

  • If you want ultra cheap with genuine guarantee then the EagleBox is still the one if you are looking to pay just that little bit more then anything from our Amiko range would be ideal, the Amiko Mini HD for those after closed source that just works and includes YouTube and YouPorn support plus happens to be one of the best presented receivers ever or for a few pound more the Amiko SHD-8900 Alien with Spark AND Enigma or finally the Amiko Alien 2 starting at the same price as the Blade 7000 but with twin tuner or better and Spark and Enigma2 - in all honesty these 3 Amiko receivers are really starting to prove a lot of others as just old hat...

  • Yep agreed with every post so far... I have tasted both sides of this argument... I got 2x cheep Openbox S9, support dried up a bit but this Box is as good as any for watching TV.. All I ever have to do with the OpenBox is update the channel lists every few months.. Since I got it up and running, I have had Zero trouble with it. I then got a VU+ Duo and WOW, what a box... This box is very close to the perfect solution for this hobby.. I read how good these box's were before I purchased but I was still surprised & impressed by its ability when it arrived. That Said, when I started out the budget was just not there for the VU+ Duo so I got onto the ladder with a basic starter box (That I still use 24/7 today).. I know you are not questioning the Openbox S9 but for that kind of budget I would assume they are very similar.. Good luck whatever you do m8
