This might be a silly question but if my Solo is powered up & I have a HDD plugged into it can i copy files over my network to it from another oc.
that way I can then use the media player to watch stuff on the solo?
Thanks
Bart

Yes buddy ,i just ftp with dcc into movies folder on hdd and playback via the media player on the solo
Use VU control center or DCC to ftp them to where you have your hdd mounted (usually /media/hdd/), but you may find it quicker just attaching the external hdd to your pc if there are many files.
Ok thanks so would I not be able to see the HDD on my network just through my network places etc so I can map a drive to it to copy.
I seem to have a major problem every time I disconnect a HDD from my solo. It then doesn't recognise it and I have to initialize etc

No mate, you connect to your solo by ftp & from there navigate to media/hdd (or whatever it is mounted as) & send your files in.
Doesn't you VU image include a SMB server ?
This way you can access your hdd trough network...
Not sure I will check if it does do I need to do anything to use it on the box
It does as well as mediatomb also however having tried these i have to say i was a bit dissapointed performance wise. Im sure it is alot better on the higher spec vu+ models though.

Take a look at this thread, it may be what you are trying to achieve, Problem mounting windows 7 drive on my Vu+.
Thanks but don't think that's gonna help me. I've an xp pc that I use to download and was thinking if I could copy stuff I download direct to the HDD that's connected to the solo then it would save me copying the files to a separate HDD in order to play on the solo
U could maybe do. Am thinking get hdd part of ut homegroup and select the directory to hdd. It sounds possible whether this is the case i dont know

That's exactly what the "Samba / SMB" package for your receiver does.
It turns mounted harddisks into a fileserver.
The performance though, as Ten Below stated, isn't fantastic but it works!
Hi I'm now using vix and not blackhole. What options are there other than using FTP which is very slow. Cheers Bart
the forementioned options apply - not sure what more you expect to acheive really.
Where are the options for the samba server in vix as I don't see them in the vix menu or set up menu

And.. what is slow.. ?
On top, you will aquire about 2-5 megabyte per second with your box.. Also with SMB.

I wasn't sure - but it took me a few seconds to find out for myself. Sometimes messing with things and discovering things for yourself pays off, and you learn a lot more, and much quicker than by just asking - but because I like to help...
Menu button - Setup - System - Network.
