Differences between Openbox and Dreambox

  • Hi there,

I would like to know what the key difference is between buying an Openbox and a Dreambox when it comes to card sharing/decrypting channels? I know that the Dreambox is used for c lines and cccam using card sharing. Does the Openbox use this method of decrypting as well?

I only ever seem to find people talking about card sharing, but I want to know if there is a way to decrypt channels from all or any international packages between 36E and 28W without card sharing. I know that there were ways to do this buying a device, inserting a blank card into it and connecting it to your PC/laptop etc. but I've never understood what this actually does. Is this something that the Openbox works with?

I currently own an old Phoenix Apollo CI receiver. I know a few years this could be converted to an Openbox. Does anyone know if this is still possible?

    Many thanks for your help!

  • Hello ratster23,

Would you mind passing by introductions first please:Forum Gateway - Powered by DnP Firewall

Ok the main difference is that a Dreambox is capable of running a server, the openbox can't.The openbox can be used as a client only, this means that you can add a c line to it to decrypt channels. The Dreambox can do everything you have mentioned already,cline/cccam etc and could be used for C/S.

You can decrypt channels from all or any international packages by buying a subscription for them, but it would cost a lot of money! so you can see where C/S plays a part.

Hope this helps answer some of your questions, make that intro post and i am sure some other members will be able to help you out.

  • As already reminded,,please do yourself a favour and read and accept the rules.
Then you will soon realise that your first post should be in introductions.
The obvious answer to start with is by buying a subscription card to whichever platform you wish to view.

  • thanks for your reply. As the Openbox is client only, does this mean that it doesn't need to connect to broadband over wifi when using c line? Or does c line operate over wifi? I understand that ccam's use wifi.

No . yuo have totally misunderstood.
Client means that you recieve from a server ,whether that be through lan or rj45 for internal networks, or internet from outside server networks.
Start reading the carsharing stickies section ,it is very clearly indicated and in simple terms.
Btw . a dreambox is an original genuine box which still cost a pretty penny. a DM box is a clone.
¿ still not sure which box to go for?? visit the sponsor page and you will get even more alternatives depending on what you want to do or recieve.
One last note ,,SD boxes(enigma 1) have been around for about 10 years now,, HD boxes ( enigma2) have been out some years..
the European broadcasting standards are evolving, some countries more so than others..
so best advice is to start reading more to see which stbs have best support, compatibility ,etc,,

  • thanks for the info. I would rather not use card sharing/c lines to gain access to channels as I don't like the idea of accessing the channels through the internet from someone else. I have been out of the satellite TV scene for a few years now. Is there not any other way to decrypt channels using any other method? I remember there used to be something called Matrix CAM's, wafer/fun cards, softcam files but I've never understood what these are and what channels/packages they decrypt and what box you can use them on. I remember my old Phoenix Apollo was hacked so that when you leave it on TPS 1 (French channel) for 10 seconds, the receiver would unlock international packages which were encrypted with Nagravision 2. I want to know if there is anything similar to this around nowadays. All I seem to find is card sharing when I use the search box. I'm not after every package around, just a few like Digital+, Viasat, Canal+. I'm not even interested in S*y. Maybe I should start a new thread? Many thanks.

  • what you are referring to is years before!!!
Although there are softcams nowadays,, they dont last long ,some no more than 10 mins..
so in a nutshell those days are well and truly gone!!
I ,and I´m sure a lot of users here have drawer/cupboards full of old equipment which is so obsolete ,it wont even sell on 2ndhand sites!!!
These days you either have an up to date subscription card for sat, cable or IPTV...

Hi, I am more than happy to pay for subscription. In fact, I would like to purchase Digital+ (the Spanish package), but where is the best place to buy this card from? Am I able to use it even in my Phoenix Apollo which has CAM slots? Am I able to use this card in the UK? Thank you.

  • You can purchase this card quite easily..but your first headache will be to ensure you recieve a grey card( seca) and not the white one (Nagra).
Second problem is not a problem,,i have sen apollo´s being used but ecm times are quite high..so therfore strongly recommend updating your hardware.
As I mentioned before, check out the sponsor´s offers ,they are very interesting.. then choose a HD stb ( enigma2 ) to read the card (with the appropiate emulator) and view on your tv.
Yes , you could use this card in the UK as it updates via satellite not by phone(phone is only needed to purchase ppv like taquillas or eventos)
As you mentioned before you are not willing to enter the cardsharing world and I agree and respect this ,but let me just give you an example...
If you are in the UK and get a UK card you could then theoretically share with another peer( user) who has the spanish card ,etc...
This I would imagine could easier for you as would neeed a spanish bank account, address, for the spanish card..
