if you are wanting to use a dedicated server start by looking at these threads, it will give you a general feel on how to setup (an old pc will do, as you are wanting to share with family etc keep costs low. theres no piont folking out lots of $$$ when a basic machine will do exactly the same thing) > http://linuxsat-support.com/li…-1-3-install-package.html

theres also other things you will need to research, such as port forwarding, and setting up a DNS for your friends to connect to your server.
