update to 11.10 not cannot remote in

i have my ubuntu server running for a few weeks and the other night i let it update to 11.10 now i have this gnome3 desktop that i dont like but most of all i cannot connect remotely tryed vnc tight vnc but its a no go
i relay dont want to reinstall but need to update my config any ideas ??? probley going to have to ftp into it or something

You don't say what you are using to connect but try this.

Try reinstalling SSH, in putty enter this

reinstalled SSH i can connect but cant get past the password screen i tried editing the sshd_config but its read only going to study more
