I am experiencing problems and have been told I need to back up my system and install a new image. I am a novice in these things and it took me a while to get everything going when I got my box a couple of years ago. I am really worried about losing all my settings. Could someone please point me to any tutorials that will allow me to back up my whole system, then where to get a new image and install it. My current settings are:-
Chipset BCM7335
CPU BCM7335BO
Cores 2
Version Helios
Build 004
Kernel 3.1.1
Drivers 2014-03-10
Last Update 2014-04-21
Thank you for any help.

There two types of backups, Image backup and settings backup.
I'd recommend creating both.
An image backup is handy if everything goes wrong and you just want to revert back to your previous working image.
A settings backup just backups your settings/configs etc.
This is handy if you want to upgrade your image but want all your previous settings reloaded onto your new image.
A good tutorial on how to perform an image backup is here.
A settings backup is near identical. -
Creating a backup image is covered in the ViX manual, section 8.
Restoring a settings / personal backup from a very old image on to the latest images wouldn`t be recommended, as it may corrupt the image.. You can try it, but if you experience issues on the new image you will know why..
You can find the latest images on the NavBar > Nightly Builds or here -> Vu+ DUO Images

Thank you for your help! When I go to the back up menu, it backs up to the Hdd - is there a way to back up to USB? I have one permanently in the back for EPG etc., but I would like to use a new one in the front.

In backup manager press the Menu button for setup, then change the location to the other usb (media/usb or however you have it mounted)..
