Public urged to pay respects at funeral of war hero who has almost nobody to attend

MEMBERS of the public are being urged to pay their final respects to a late war hero who has almost nobody to attend his funeral.

George Thompson fought bravely for his country in the Second World War - but has passed away at the age of 96 with no family members and few surviving friends.
Now the Royal Air Force Association has called on well-wishers to give Mr Thompson, of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, the send-off he deserves.
Andy Merris, standard bearer of the Rotherham RAFA, said: "It's about trying to get people there and to give the guy a send-off.
"We would love people to attend as a mark of respect and just to say, 'Thank you, God bless you'."
George William Thompson was born in Sheffield on September 19, 1917.
Both he and his wife, Mildred, worked at Laycock's Engineering Works, which made aircraft parts.

Mr Thompson was an inspector in the Aircraft Inspection Department.
His role was regarded as a reserved occupation so it took numerous attempts before he was eventually accepted into the RAF for pilot training at the age of 24.
He began his training on April 13, 1942, and just 17 days later he flew solo for the first time.
Mr Thompson and his fellow course members were earmarked to fly bombers and he was sent to Canada and the USA. While training with the American Army Air Corps it was discovered he had incredible night vision.
Speaking previously, Mr Thompson said: "We were supposed to be going onto bombers but, when it was recorded about my night-sight, I went onto night fighters.
"That most likely saved my life because thousands of bomber crew were killed."
Mr Thompson did have a number of close shaves himself, notably a dicey flight from Britain to Morocco.
Knowing they had limited fuel, Mr Thompson and his navigator Russell Spencer waited until there was a favourable tailwind before they took off. About halfway there, it looked like they weren't going to make it.

"We were given a new course to cut out some distance and we flew over Portugal and the bottom end of Spain with our cannons ready because there were German aircraft in the area," Mr Thompson had recalled.
"Luckily, we never saw a thing - it was lunchtime and I think they must have all gone to lunch.
"However still over the Atlantic, the gauges were showing empty. I saw the coast coming up and I flew straight towards the runway.
"As we taxied at the end of the runway, the control tower told us to follow a jeep and, just as I turned off the runway, both engines stopped. We had run out of fuel."
Mr Thompson and his squadron flew night interception and patrolled the skies above the Burmese jungle looking for any Japanese incursions until VJ Day in August, 1945.
He was finally demobbed from the RAF in May 1946 with the rank of Warrant Officer.
Mildred died in 2004. Mr Thompson spent his final years in a care home and died on May 14.
The funeral will take place on Friday, May 30, at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium at 3.30pm.

As the title says, OpenViX Apollo is now available to download from www.openvix.co.uk, I will post a official release thread and changelogs etc as soon as i'm able to access a PC. For now we have held back several models while we further test drivers etc, hopefully they will be released very soon.

Affected images held back for further testing include ALL Technomate images, ALL golden media xpeed Lx images and the Gigablue HD Quad Plus, we hope to be able to release these images as soon as our tests return results to our satisfaction.

Proudly introduces a brand new ViX image for all OpenViX supported receivers

OpenViX Apollo requires a full reflash, you can still use a settings backup taken from OpenViX Zeus or OpenViX Helios (but not from OpenViX 3.0 or earlier).

There have been some changes in AutoBouquetsMaker, you may need to set your providers again.

So what is different in OpenViX Apollo then?

As with OpenViX Zeus the main difference is core of the image or the OE (Open Embedded), this has undergone a lot of changes, updates and fixes (including fixes for the heartbleed bug in openssl). As a user you should not notice any differences between OpenViX Helios and OpenViX Apollo. (i.e. there are no real functional differences.)

OpenViX Helios build 017 will be the final build in the Helios series, and so Apollo takes over the reins.

But why a new image so soon, you just launched Helios?

Basically the recent update of the image OE (Open Embedded) to v 2.2, was very significant. This contains substantial changes and updates that mean you cannot use the online update feature from OpenViX Zeus build 023. Rather than asking users not to use the online update function, we have taken the step of changing the image name to ensure that users perform a fresh flash.

The only downside with hardware cams is that unless you buy the insanely expensive professional models ( £2000 and upwards ), you can only decode or record a single stream, so pretty much useless if you want to use with a multi tuner setup.

I simply said it was not a good idea messing with drivers when you dont know what they do but to wait for a official fix from the manufacturer, you were the one gobbing off telling me you had killed your receiver and were going to complain to WoS even though it was through your own stupidity that it went wrong.

The fix has now been released by the manufacturer and was posted both here and on WoS several days ago, it has also been submitted into the OE-Alliance GIT so will be in future images and builds.

I dont know why the fix was deleted from this forum or by who, but if you google ini-x000-drivers-3.6.0-20140505.zip thats the fix for all receivers suffering this issue as it affects all venton and venton based receivers.

Where is the official fix for miraclebox twin premium menu ok button and why have all traces of it been removed from this site ,issue was with the dvb.ko pheonix gobbed off about playing with drivers but if you never fixed it diy it never got resolved we went from zeus what was an already resolved sly uk cam name to helios now to Apollo whats going on

well from what i have heard, all channels will be off by the end of the year (2014), Just something a very trusted friend tells me, and i have no reason not to believe him.

Just worth pointing out as you posted this in the OE-Alliance section that ABM does not have any dependencies, it does not need DVB Snoop to function, thats LraiZers plugin that requires it.

Don't worry tooth this will give you good practice for when ViX Apollo comes out.... :snicker:

A settings backup made from either Zeus or Helios will work happily with Apollo, as technically they are all part of the same image line. upon each new OE merge a reflash is required and rather than asking users to refalsh only for them to ignore us, we decided to force their hand so to prevent unnecessary problems.

The exact list of changes is readily available by reading the changelogs.
