Just be careful with the skins you choose buddy, as you`ve already noticed their not all compatable with certain images and plugins.
It is possible to remove the problem skin without having to reflash again, FTP to /usr/share/enigma2 and delete the skin folder.
If you want try to differant skins download them from the images addons panel, much safer this way.
The only down side there is the HD glass skin ties it self into many many system areas and is virtually impossible to fully de-install.
Because of their legality they are considered as a taboo subject on many forums.

you download the .ipk file you need and ftp it to /tmp on your receiver and install it via blue button > ViX > install local extension.

as has already been suggested try another USB stick to rule out the current one your using from being defective.
Is this a clone or a original receiver ?
The reason i ask is that there seems to be some kind of memory leak associated with some Vu+ Duo's running kernel 3.1.1 images ( does not matter which image only that there kernel 3.1.1 based ). Now Vu are fully aware and have had a one of the affected receivers in their possession but as of yet cant find the exact problem. for now there has been discovered a plugin that seems to help with these low memory issues so you can give that a try.

now when the new image is released dont forget to change the HTTP port in DBE back to 80 as in that image we have removed the old web interface completely and the Open Web interface has been assigned the default HTTP port.

yes i meant 8088 sorry about that, as i said thats needed so that DBE can connect to the receiver via a inbuilt telnet session and initiate a GUI restart so that the settings take hold.
you could try this
start a telnet session and issue the init 4 command.
start DBE and transfer the settings to the receiver but do not hit the reload button.
go back to the telnet session and issue the init 3 command
now close dbe and check the settings have taken hold. or just use dreamset as it will do all the above but with a very ugly gui.

I had something similar to your problem what happens with me is,
It uploads no problems but cant send reload settings so using DBedit I connect to box and click ftp and then click the reload settings button
as pointed out above that part is handled via a Telnet command which needs the correct HTTP port setting either in DBE ( change it to 8080 ) or just change the port that the Open Web IF uses on the box it self to port 80, which is the default port the old webif used.
its not the ftp port you need to change but the HTTP port, change this to 8080.
There is sometimes a problem with some boxes where they can crash during EPG download due to low memory This is usually solved by using a temporary swap file, There is also a possibility of some Duo's suffering some kind of memory leak with the new 3.1.1 kernel. Vu are aware of this and have one of the affected boxes in their possession now to try and find the cause and hopefully a fix.
as i said however my own Duo is and always has been rock solid.
cant speak for others and i'm not dismissing your problems but i have never had such a problem with any build of ViX regardless of the kernel version, out of interest what hardware revision is your receiver ? as mine is a early version 1.3 main board ( originally came with a white remote control unit ) which may or may not have some bearing on this problem ?.
It's down to the Open Web IF as in build 204 we removed the old web interface but left it in the feeds for those wishing to continue to use it as such the Open Web IF is still using it's own default port. you can either change this on the receiver or change it in DBE to mirror the new port number.
