If this doesnt work, bring your box around to your mates and stick it in there....see if this works..

tell you what.. after reading an incredible amount of posts regarding this box ,,,,,
try this:
stick spaze 2.2 on usb (use AZup 2.1.6 to install this FW).( not sure if this applies tothe latest firms but the end of the image name should have patch.bin otherwise it might not be recognised.
Then unplug the box from mains , stick in the usb ,plug in hte box , If it shows OPTIONS ,then FORMAT AREA 3 or 4 times ,then UPGRADE to install the image.
I hope this somehow helps,, some users write that you need to INSIST on FORMAT AREA 3 or 4 times...
If this does not get you any further ,then here is a minimanual on HOW TO:

And the official FW has started, if all goes well the settings screen will appear and azbox can be configured.
This is working 100% in my box (premium HD). Try another USB-stick when it fails.

Not sure about signal , could be simply difference in sensitivity.. I have had similar symptoms...
,I have vu UNO + dm500+S ( original as its hologram, internal series Nº + reputation from dealer(it cost me a wee fortune in its day) as MAC can be as easily changed as changing channels) and an original ALPS tuner (check the capture)
and so as long as you get a decent signal I wouldnt look into it so much ,,another way to find a real difference is tryin to catch a "weaker" signal from a more distant sat
(like thor depending on your geography),, as far as it not locking on ,¿have you got the latest channel settings ??
remember the motor ,like the box , has implanted memory,thats why when changing image etc,, its nearly always best to keep the motor at 0º.
Although this is suggested by the manufacturers,, I havent ever needed to do it..
One last point ,,you wrote that it is a 2nd hand DM500 ,,so perhaps even by asking the previous owner,it will prob turn out to be a cheap chinese copy..

The crosspeg epg is saved on HDD or USB as you say ,then it is " viewed/ read" by another prog ( for example cooltvguide) on your box,, not through a pc viewer..
