A plan to raise cash to make a router that hides what people do online has been suspended after questions were raised about the project.

Anonabox sought $7,500 (£4,700) on crowdfunding site Kickstarter but got pledges of more than $585,000 in its first five days.

The project was pulled by Kickstarter which said it had worries about who made the hardware being offered.

Other problems with the project also emerged via social news site Reddit.
    Security worry

The Anonabox project claimed to involve creating a tiny $45 custom-built router that sent all a person's browsing traffic across the Tor network. This bounces data around the net, encrypting it at every step, to hinder attempts to trace who is visiting a site or who has written a particular message or blogpost. Tor is widely used in many nations by human rights activists to avoid official scrutiny.

Typically people use software to join the Tor network but Anonabox claimed hardware was better because it was less open to tampering and attack by people keen to unmask anonymous browsers.

Soon after the project debuted on Kickstarter, some people noticed that the hardware being claimed as custom-built was already available elsewhere. Pictures of the prototype Anonabox seemed to be very similar to a device available from a Chinese electronics firm.

Others questioned the project's pledge to be open source as relatively little of the code running on the router was shared. Finally, some uncovered security shortcomings with the Anonabox that could give attackers a way to compromise the device.

The scrutiny led Kickstarter to suspend the project and ensure cash from backers did not get passed on. In an email to tech news site Wired, Kickstarter said questions raised about where the hardware came from and who made it brought about the suspension.

August Germar, who came up with the idea for Anonabox, told Ars Technica that the similar-looking devices seen on Chinese websites were "just generic knockoffs" saying it was good the hardware was available from China.

"It doesn't bother me," he said. "I just wanted more people to be able to have a device like this."

Despite the project being cancelled on Kickstarter, Mr Germar said he planned to continue development of Anonabox and sell it directly.

The furore around Anonabox comes as the Tor Project announces version 4.0 of its core software.

The updated version disables some older software found to be vulnerable to attack and adds some data traffic funnelling systems that seek to get around widely used firewall systems. In particular, said Tor, these systems should help people in China avoid official scrutiny of their browsing habits and behaviour.

there is a discussion under way in VIP regarding this very topic already, you should really consider donating and upgrading to become a VIP as your missing out on some great content :36_002:

Hi mate, not speaking from personal experience, just feeding back what i have read on various sites around the web, they seem to be a little bit hit and miss, some of them are pretty slow at clearing the channels and need constant rebooting of the receiver, yet a guy on the official VU discussion forums was swearing by an Hauppauge usb tuner

I think it's very much down to having the right drivers in place for the tuner itself

Hopefully someone with first hand experience will post on this thread, it's something that has interested me in the past also

It is easy to get confused at the moment, so much information being passed around, some of the info missing, some of it being changed or misinterpreted

Just a case of sitting tight and waiting to see what comes in the following weeks

I've read elsewhere that all channels are open via starsat receivers and Gshare (HD & SD). I have no idea how that works but am looking into it....

Hey s7uat, you probably were unaware mate, but Gshare is a payserver based out of Tunisia, its not something we support here

    Just a heads up

Cable broadband is faster than fibre on average in the UK, Ofcom has suggested.

Research carried out by the Office of Communications shows that - in the six months leading up to May 2014 - cable broadband achieved average speeds of 43.3Mbit/s, compared to 42.0Mbit/s for fibre.

It is the first time that cable broadband has managed greater speeds than fibre.

Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) digital economy minister Ed Vaizey said: "I'm delighted to say that these findings, whilst fantastic news, are not unexpected.

"Government has taken access to superfast broadband speeds to more than one million homes and businesses across the UK throughout our nationwide rollout, which has been instrumental in average speeds increasing by more than 3.5 times since May 2010."

The Ofcom report also states that the average actual broadband speed in the UK has risen by 5% to 18.7Mbit/s from November 2013 and May 2014.

Google, BT and other leading internet firms have been summoned to a meeting on web safety organised by the UK government.

The coalition is demanding a clampdown on harmful content online, such as images depicting child abuse and material designed to promote terrorism, BBC News reports.

Culture Secretary Maria Miller spoke of widespread public concern over such issues in a letter to the companies, who will attend a meeting on June 17 to discuss solutions.

She wrote: "Whether these concerns focus on access to illegal pornographic content, the proliferation of extremist material which might incite racial or religious hatred, or the ongoing battle against online copyright theft, a common question emerges: what more can be done to prevent offensive online content potentially causing harm?"

The Department of Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) will discuss proposals for a set of industry-wide protocols for tackling harmful content, the potential use of online filters to block said content, and measures for policing public WiFi.

Web giants such as Google, Yahoo and Microsoft could also be asked to consider agreeing to a code of practise similar to the one governing mobile broadband companies.

LFC TV undergoing a major upgrade

Popular club station LFC TV is undergoing a major upgrade which explains the recent significant changes to their schedule.

Fans were left frustrated by the lack of coverage for the under-19s’ UEFA Youth League match against Basel in Switzerland this week.

As well as no live action, shows such as Press Box and Thursday Night Live have also gone off air with fans having to settle for re-runs of old matches and programmes.

However, Anfield officials insist it’s only a temporary measure as they switch across to high definition. The full service is expected to return by the end of the month.

In the meantime news bulletins and highlights from games such as the young Reds’ 3-2 defeat to Basel are available at:

FACT secures record £22,600 in fines and costs after conviction for illegal S*y use in pubs.

Latest order brings fines & costs awarded since 1st July 2014 to £68,765.57 as part of efforts to protect thousands of law-abiding pubs

The Federation Against Copyright Theft (‘FACT’) has secured a conviction resulting in the licensees of Hogan’s Bar in Doncaster being ordered to pay a record £22,600 in fines and costs for showing S*y Sports illegally. This latest prosecution is the eleventh brought by FACT this season alone, bringing total fines and costs paid by licensees across the UK to £68,765.57.

In this latest case, Simon Barnett and Anthony Ball of Hogan’s Bar alongside Doncaster Balls Limited, were found guilty in their absence on 22nd August at Doncaster Magistrates Court for dishonest reception of a television transmission (a S*y televised football match) without a commercial viewing agreement with the intent to avoid payment of the applicable charge, contrary to Section 297 (1) of the Copyright Design and Patents Act 1988. The resulting order to pay a combined total of £22,600 in fines and costs sets a new record following a criminal conviction for illegal S*y use in licenced premises.

This latest conviction demonstrates the potential financial cost to businesses who choose to broadcast matches to which S*y has exclusive rights in the UK without the correct commercial viewing agreement from S*y Business. There have been more than 1,500 similar prosecutions to date, hundreds of further cases are in the pipeline and each conviction can result in criminal prosecution, substantial costs and potential loss of licence.

Stephen Gerrard, Prosecuting Manager, FACT, said: “We sometimes hear from licensees that they are prepared to risk a fine of around £5,000 for showing S*y Sports illegally, but this case shows that both licensees, employees and associated companies can each face fines of up to £5,000 for every offence they commit, or each match that they show. On top of this, the court can order legal costs to be paid and there is a requirement to inform the local licensing authority of the criminal offence, which can impact their licenses – it simply isn’t worth the risk.”

These convictions were carried out by FACT on behalf of its members and form a key part of S*y’s commitment to protecting pubs who honestly invest in legitimate S*y Sports subscriptions. The company is committed to visiting every licensed premise reported by other publicans and/or organisations for illegally showing S*y. In total, S*y has made arrangements to visit more than 700 pubs each week in towns and cities across the UK this season.

Alison Dolan, Deputy Managing Director, S*y Business, said: “This issue is very close to the hearts of our legitimate S*y pub customers who are being left short-changed by licensees broadcasting S*y content illegally. It creates an uneven playing field for their businesses, which is why we are committed to visiting thousands of pubs this season, as well as investigating suppliers and continuing to support FACT’s work.”
