Great reply.well thats good to know i might bring it all here then.
Ive done allot of reading today about static ip and do understand now why we have to do this. i just need to get time to have another go.
Ive installed putty and the other programmes mentioned onto this pc so there ready.
ive found another way of setting the static ip address that i think i will try which is by using cmd ipconfig/all through control panell and adapter settings in windows.

Firstly good morning and Thankyou all for sticking with me.
Im using a black sly DG934G router.
I got upto the Ip settings part went in using username pswrd and tried to find the section within the settings to set the static ip,I wrote the ip and mac address down and went in but couldn’t 100% say I was doing it correctly.
I then became stuck again when getting to the putty part because I think I was running the terminal based Ubuntu with none of the other recommended programmes already installed as the tutorial suggested,(so I was of to a non starter really)or was I supposed to install the programmes like putty ect onto this pc not server??
Ive downloaded putty and winscp onto the non server pc.
And am happy to use omnikey, that’s why I got both because I didn’t know which one would come in first for the job and there are cheap.
    :shake:

Sorry ive give the wrong impression, i was wanting to just check id set up the static ip address up as it should be in sly router setup, I understand how to get into my router settings, yea im afraid it is sly broadband im referring too. I have another bband provider that would be better at my own address but was advised that the card must be setup at the same address it is issued at so that’s why im setting up at a family members house because its more practical financially.
Im a little familiar with all this type of stuff because I have a duo and tm500 ive also set up other receivers and a few motorised dishes for friends family ect....
Im just new to this end of the hobby and that’s why im asking for help.
I was confused by the tutorial and didn’t understand that I had to have all them programmes already installed, I totally missed the point im afraid..
The problem is that im following a tutorial with the wrong type of ubuntu so I just need to find a tutorial with commands only for terminal based ubuntu.
I’m going to try and get there.just need to look for another tutorial.

sorry for trouble,do appreciate the help you have given me

can someone give me a point in the right direction im just wanting to configure router ip setting in ***s router page. i know i have to add ip of server pc and mac address but what am i adding it in dns? wan?

think i should be using another tutorial ??? frustrated lol

Thats cleared that up i thought i had messed up, its a good spec laptop but ill just leave it as the server ubuntu for now.
The tutorial i was reading last night mentions putty and stuff so im not really know what road to go down.
should i go for smartgo or omnikey ???

Just a quick update then guys,
ive got my smartgo usb reader also got myself a omnikey delivered just incase i decide to use either one or both???,if i get a different card,
(purchased from the sponser shop by the way at great prices may i add.
For now im using my Acer Aspire laptop as the server its surely upto the job at least untill i get some money to save for somthing like a optiplex (Dell) pc.
Im defo going to go hard wired and feed a long ethernet cable to the room.(think this way its more reliable..
Anyways i havent got very far just trying to learn about ubuntu and how it all works, think im starting to understand a little bit but still got loads to go.
was expecting some kind of user desktop/interface with ubuntu, didnt expect it to just be command prompt type page. Long way to go.........
Got newborn baby and full time job which is leaving me with all 0.37minutes per day to do this hobby, lol.

    ill keep everyone posted

Sorry took so long been doing night feed with baby. anyway...

Ive took your advise and downloaded ubuntu 12.04 server 64bit onto my usb pen, im getting stuck again, dont know if its because im trying to setup without A been in the house were im going to be having the cs and B im not hard wired in.
im getting stuck when it gets to the part on the guide were it moves onto putty,i dont have putty on this laptop only ubuntu?
im confused (there again it doesnt take much to confuse me, sorry for ignorance in advance.

im off to bed now, hope i can get a bit better at this over the weekend, ive got everything ready to go,just hope i can crack it.

if anyone could help me it would be great:doubt:.

also im lucky in the way i have one omnikey and one smartgo reader so i can use whatevers best for the job.

Thought this was the case but wanted to check. I've got ubuntu installed on a acer laptop which is only a year old so it will do for now. I defo want to setup on a proper pc and have been looking for a cheap pc to set up,I'll be much more at ease thinking its running on a pc rather than a laptop, like usually on windows you can control the power settings but on Ubuntu I don't know how to set the laptop never to go off .
I might have to put up with the laptop for a while though . Need to do next steps now so will crack on,it's exciting setting this up tho love good challenge and hobby

I'm thinking dream box Hd used as server then dad can still watch the channels directly from that box at his location and it can be used as server for me to pick up line from my house . I'm sure dream box or Technomate will have a plugin that is used for server organisation and making c n lines ??? These laptops overheat when left on too long I'm thinking??

Does that card have to stay at dads addresses what I asking is, is there any way there can see its been activated from my house?
what does os MEAN? operating system? what is autoinstall scripts?
is there any plugins for recievers that is been used as server to make things easier?
