  • Ive been directed to here to get some help so here goes, before I start just want to mention what a good looking forum this is it's very user friendly and seems to have the lot all in one place.
I'm wanting to know what way to go with making my own server for uk only
Would it be a case of using a laptop or pc connected to a reader or receiver or can it be done using just a receiver to do everything?
Hope I'm not breaking any rules here

If you have a linux based receiver that can work as a server you are ready to go, let us know what receiver you are using and what image is installed, then we can point you in the right direction to oscam and how to configure it to work with UK package.

  • hi
another cheap solution is a dreambox 500, even a second hand clon is a perfect server.
just to mention the old workhorse dm500, for me still a impressive device.
hard to kill, very solid box.
    saludos

very simple and straight forward, loads of support around.

  • What I've got is vu duo downstairs and tm500 upstairs I run black hole 172 feb on duo. And ur on tm.
I'm sick of paying so my dad pays for sly and he said he's willing to let me use his sly card he lives in a different location so I can bring his card here and then buy him a receiver to pick his channels up or do it from his location only thing is he knows not how anything works, I want to be able to grow if I get chance ie not be restricted and then have to spend more money I'd rather just get the best gear now and keep it as simple as possible. I have a old laptop hp pavilion that I don't use that I could get started with.
It's all just so new I'm right att starting line ha ha

  • Birdman,

Its all on here mate and most problems/questions have been answered so you just need to do some digging!

Use that Lappy as server > Get a Reader for your card!

Choose an OS and run the Autoinstall scripts > They will install OS and Oscam/Cccam - so your server will be setup and just need tweaking!

We are all here to help along the way!

Location up to you mate.....once setup its normally the inquisitive mind that makes changes lol but it can be left alone!
You can always access the server at pops location remotely if needed....but either or will work!

Have Fun, Keep a Clear Mind! and Post back if any problems!

  • Does that card have to stay at dads addresses what I asking is, is there any way there can see its been activated from my house?
what does os MEAN? operating system? what is autoinstall scripts?
is there any plugins for recievers that is been used as server to make things easier?

  • I'm thinking dream box Hd used as server then dad can still watch the channels directly from that box at his location and it can be used as server for me to pick up line from my house . I'm sure dream box or Technomate will have a plugin that is used for server organisation and making c n lines ??? These laptops overheat when left on too long I'm thinking??

  • Just a quick update then guys,
ive got my smartgo usb reader also got myself a omnikey delivered just incase i decide to use either one or both???,if i get a different card,
(purchased from the sponser shop by the way at great prices may i add.
For now im using my Acer Aspire laptop as the server its surely upto the job at least untill i get some money to save for somthing like a optiplex (Dell) pc.
Im defo going to go hard wired and feed a long ethernet cable to the room.(think this way its more reliable..
Anyways i havent got very far just trying to learn about ubuntu and how it all works, think im starting to understand a little bit but still got loads to go.
was expecting some kind of user desktop/interface with ubuntu, didnt expect it to just be command prompt type page. Long way to go.........
Got newborn baby and full time job which is leaving me with all 0.37minutes per day to do this hobby, lol.

    ill keep everyone posted

  • The server edition of Ubuntu is command based, I believe you can extend it to have a GUI or you can run the 'normal' edition of Ubuntu.

I started with a very old laptop so I opted for the server edition, due to recommendations. You maybe ok with a GUI edition if you find it easier and depending on the spec of the laptop you are using.

But sticking with what you have, so far you have installed Ubuntu and...?

This is where I become unstuck, I would recommend you get telnet and ftp working so you can connect to it and work with it as you would your vu duo.

I think the commands you need are

    Code
    sudo apt-get install telnet

    Code
    sudo apt-get install vsftpd

You may find the following link useful _http://www.wikihow.com/Set-up-an-FTP-Server-in-Ubuntu-Linux

Then run the automated script you will find in the tutorial section and that should be more or less your server setup.

You may also find the list of commands on this link useful _http://linuxsat-support.com/linux-pc-server-tutorials/16175-usefull-ubuntu-oscam-cccam-commands.html

  • Thats cleared that up i thought i had messed up, its a good spec laptop but ill just leave it as the server ubuntu for now.
The tutorial i was reading last night mentions putty and stuff so im not really know what road to go down.
should i go for smartgo or omnikey ???

  • If you are using one of the auto install scripts then openssh, proftpd, apache ect are already installed during the install process so you wont need to add any of the above mate.

Oops my bad, i must have done something wrong on my install

As far as I am aware depends which card you are using, but 'they' say the Omnikey (assuming your card is supported) gives a faster response times and is also the cheaper of the two. but hey I could be wrong again :)

  • can someone give me a point in the right direction im just wanting to configure router ip setting in ***s router page. i know i have to add ip of server pc and mac address but what am i adding it in dns? wan?

  • Birdman,

    Have a look here

    http://linuxsat-support.com/li…address-ubuntu-linux.html

If you choose to do it the router way it may depend on your router make!

Log into Router and it will be under a reference to IP setup or something to those words!

You will be given an option to set between a range.....you put ip address for both of your choice e.g 192.168.0.87 and 192.168.0.87

Save those settings and reboot router!

That's a vague description of what to do but as i don't know setup and im on virgin best i could do!
