For me, OpenPli is really the best to have. Simple, easy and much faster as all the others images.
Before I have used OpenATV but after some weeks, this image is too slow or buggy (too much upadte not very good!)...
So OpenPli is and stay the real number 1...

with pli the user has to do a lot of things which can be used immediately in openatv
pli has removed a lot, but many users install many things after, and then you notice that openatv is not slower, in pli the things are just missing

I don't know BlackHole, but I quite often compared when developing plugins for Enigma2, precisely the OpenPLi vs. OpenATV distributions.
Unfortunately, I have to state that OpenPLi is faster as the OpenATV because the OpenPLi contains only necessary plugins and modules.
Of course, this does not mean that it is ugly, incompatible, less modular. Compared to OpenATV, OpenPLi is faster and more reliable in my opinion. However, OpenATV supports a larger range of different set-top box manufacturers. Personally, I would prefer OpenPLi.

Of course always the latest version of OpenPLi :-). If I don't need to update the OpenPLi distribution to a new one in general, I don't update sometimes even for 2 years. OpenPLi works fast and stable. In my opinion, OpenATV is more universal (they still support many set top box manufacturers). I also often use OpenATV.

I have no problem with OpenATV 7.3 in the Vu+ Zero 4K set-top box. It works without any problems.

No no. This is not true. That's just a setup error. If you set a password, it will be required. But if you don't set a password, then it won't be necessary. Plus, using a password increases security, so that's fine. The same applies in both, in OpenPLi and in OpenATV, regarding the password... namely, that after installing the new firmware, it is necessary to set the password in your own interest - to increase security.
If you want to use a terminal connection, you must first log in via the Telnet protocol and not SSH. Then you set the password in the terminal with the "passwd" command. Then everything else will work - including the SSH terminal connection. It's better... because the password increases the security of your set-top box. This means that if someone connects to your home LAN or WiFi-LAN, they need an additional password to connect to the set-top box as well.
I personally have no connection problems at all, neither in the case of OpenPLi nor in the case of OpenATV.
