  • Hi,

Would someone please be able to explain the difference between a recovery_emmc image and a multi image and when these are used?

It is quite a while since I flashed an image by powering up a receiver, holding down a button and using a USB stick to flash an image.

I dont want to brick the box by having the wrong type of image on the USB stick for this method of flashing.

    Thank you for any advice.

  • You only use the Emmy image if the box becomes corrupt as it will delete everything and create new partitions and load the image in slot one.

NB you should not install a multi image via usb it will cause you grief.

  • recovery_emmc image and a multi image

The recovery_emmc image is used for a complete recovery of the receiver, which means that it will erase all slots.
The multi image is used if you want to use multiple images in the receiver, usually 4 slots are available in the receiver

  • What box you got, and what image are you wanting to install

    And why are you reflashing.

Thank you for all of your replies.

It is a Mutant HD51 receiver that I bought 2nd user. It came with two terrestrial tuners and an OpenVix image v5.0.027, drivers are dated 2017-05-04.

My plan is to replace one of the terrestrial tuners with an S2X tuner, update the image and use the receiver for satellite reception.

I am not sure which driver versions began to support the S2X tuner for the Mutant HD51 so wish to get the image updated for that reason in addition to having an up to date image. I might also wish to install OpenATV if there is a 4 slot multi boot option with the receiver.

As I am setting it up for satellite from scratch, it is not an issue for me to erase all previous settings and images. I just wanted to know the best way to go about it. I have the S2X tuner ready to install and have downloaded both emmc and multi versions of OpenATV and OpenVix so am ready to go once I know the best direction.

    Thx for any help.

Would you please be able to clarify a point, when you say the emmc will erase all slots does that mean any images in them will be erased and the slots will be vacant but ready to accept images? Or will they be erased and no longer available to install an image into.

  • Update:

I used the OpenATV emmc image and flashed it into the Mutant HD51 via a USB stick, holding down the front panel button while powering it up.

Everything seems to have proceeded OK.

After installing the image I swapped over one of the teresstrial tuners and replaced it with a Silabs Si2166D S2X tuner. Again, it all seems to have gone OK as I can lock and view satellite frequencies.

Now I am stuck, how do I get an OpenViX image into one of the three vacant slots in the Mutant HD51? I have looked around through the menus for a network image install but cannot find any options? The four multiboot slots are labelled:

    Slot '1' eMMC: OpenATV 7.5.1 (2025098095) - Current

    Slot '2' eMMC: Empty

    Slot '3' eMMC: Empty

    Slot '4' eMMC: Empty

I am confused why the empty slots are partly labelled eMMC, does this mean I cannot flash a multiboot image into any of them?

Any help on how to get an OpenViX image into a vacant slot most appreciated.

  • Blue button, Flash online, one of the coloured buttons says distribution (maybe yellow), select OpenVix, confirm, it will then ask which slot you want, select the slot, confirm.

Once installed, the multiboot options are in the standby/restart menu

    Thank you for your reply.

I followed the procedure and managed to install the OpenViX image.

    Thx
