  • Hi, I'm a newbie finding your helpful forum online.

I have a freesat Humax HDR1100s box which has been excellent until the search facility was stopped and I think its time to look elsewhere for a recording Freesat box.

I have a shared community dish with two feeds and I'd prefer a box with an inbuilt hard drive. Otherwise good quality picture and a simple to use interface, I've no experience and no idea which box or OS to choose.

Budget up to £300 plus hard drive. Hoping to get some guidance on a long term replacement pls...

    thanks in advance Keith

  • If you look along the bottom of this page you will see a sponsor and they will have exactly what you want. £300 is a lot.

This is what you need and get them to add an SSD 500GB, you have money to spare. The SSD goes on a cradle at rear, ie pull out cradle put ssd on it and push back in but by getting pre-installed it will be setup correctly. A lot of people say HDD is just as good so you decide,.

AB PULSe 4K Rev. II ( Twin Satellite Tuner 2XS2X) - PRE-SETUP FOR FREESAT UK

This will look nearly identical to the HUMAX , have a good read and you have to tell WOS the region you want configured.

One thing the uk adapter looks ugly but ... . Remote is tops and you get an IR extender so can hide box BUT keep well ventilated.

If you want a super duper box say so but you may have to configure yourself.

  • Having a Dreambox 920,guess there is no point in buying a Dreambox One or any other product ?

    Am I right ??

from my experience. Dreambox one is really horrible box just avoid like plague. You'll get no updates and you'll be stuck with 2019 firmware. Also custom images just do not work well. And also other tons of problems. This box complete failure.

If you do get an Enigma2 receiver, some points to note:

Do not confuse channel lists/groups with EPG. EPG is what Sky calls synopsis.

The EPG button was primarily coded to invoke the EPG screens. Although you can select channels using the EPG screens, best to become accustomed to the channel selection method first.

An Enigma2 receiver won't be able to reach online services like iPlayer etc

Channels have service references. Enigma2 uses these for recording/selection etc. They do change from time to time, so you will have to update any timers you set.

Auto timers will allow you to set a series recording, but involves a bit of refining to get the correct timers to set.

Any Enigma2 receiver with twin tuners will be sufficient for your needs. The one mentioned by claihew is good enough. Although I wouldn't waste money on an SSD, it's not needed. A 5400rpm mechanical HDD is good enough.

It's a huge learning curve when you migrate to Enigma2. Deal with one issue at a time. Plenty of people to help if you get stuck.

  • Thanks everyone for all your help and responses,

I ordered the recommended AB Pulse box with 2.5" drive and I'll set up at the weekend and let you how I get on.... had a helpful call from WOS to discuss set up and found the sales process simple and after our chat very reassuring.

    Thanks Keith
