4K image quality - HD

  • I have a 4K television (not a super expensive one, more of a budget mini LED).
My VU+ duo 4k SE box is set to 2160p resolution and multi (auto) refresh.
When I watch football in HD (Sky Sport Bundesliga), I feel that the picture quality is worse than when I set it to 1080p and 50Hz.
I feel that when set to 1080p (I am only talking about VU+ here), the image is crisper. Is this just autosuggestion or is it actually true that a lower resolution on VU+ will give a better image on a 4K TV?
When I switch on 4K channels on VU+ (there are literally only a few available...), the picture quality at 1080p seems to be worse than at 2160p.
Does this apply to the specific Open BlackHole image, or will it be the same on others such as OpenATV, ViX, etc.?

  • It is probably due to the fact your skin will be a 1920x1080 skin. The video element will also be set to 1920x1080. When you set your box to 2160p. The skin is actually scaling up, including the video element.

Thats how I interpret it. ( I may be wrong) I have a 4k tv. I create skins. I have always set my box to 1080p

4k skins - don't really exist - or not many that I know of. They are too memory hungry.

I did create a skin upscaler program that can be found here.

depending on the skin you are using. You could try upscaling your skin folder (back it up first)

And see if it makes a difference. Although I do suggest just keeping your box at 1080p for general use.

  • You can also turn on AutoResolution.
But again that seems to cause a few resync issues when its constantly switching resolution between tv sizes, and skin sizes.

  • So if the skin is 1080, the image sent by VU+ is 1080? And setting it to 2160p only causes rescaling? Am I understanding this correctly?

Therefore, it is better to stick with 1080p and leave the rest to the television for image processing?

  • That is how I see it. But your tv will process the image better.

To be honest, I was just messing around with my box, I tried 2160p resolution, i tried various different auto resolutions. 4k streams looked the same on my box with a hisilicon chipset no matter what settings I chose. 1080p video setting will run quicker though.

  • OK, thanks for explaining. I thought it was just me imagining that the picture quality was worse at 2160 than at 1080.

There aren't many 4K channels on satellite anyway, so it's nothing to worry about.

So I'll leave it at 1080p and as I can see, the TV shows 50Hz. Despite the auto setting (refresh rate) in VU+.

    Thank you very much.
