Id always go wired m8.. Too many devices clogging up the radio waves these days. Wireless will never be as stable & dependable as a wired connection and lets face it we all want our servers to run 24/7 without downtime.. I know there are loads of people on here using laptops as servers too, but I'd also recommend buying a cheep second hand desktop to use as a server rather than a laptop. Laptops can (and do) overheat, accidentally flip closed, power cables can come loose from moving & drain out on battery and so on.. You can pick up (for example) a second hand Dell optiplex 745 for about £50 and it will never let you down.. These machines were designed for big business & are more than adaquite for our hobby.. But as I said above, A laptop can do the job too..

    Good Luck

  • Thought this was the case but wanted to check. I've got ubuntu installed on a acer laptop which is only a year old so it will do for now. I defo want to setup on a proper pc and have been looking for a cheap pc to set up,I'll be much more at ease thinking its running on a pc rather than a laptop, like usually on windows you can control the power settings but on Ubuntu I don't know how to set the laptop never to go off .
I might have to put up with the laptop for a while though . Need to do next steps now so will crack on,it's exciting setting this up tho love good challenge and hobby

  • Can you post picture of Screen? Was it server addition?

Did you set password? have you tried it?

Did you set a pass phrase or something?

You've set some sort of password so if you can't remember you may have to re-install and write down passwords e.t.c next time lol!

  • Put USB in and see if it loads???
i think you installed wrong version lol

Grab the correct version from Ubuntu then using something like USBInstaller (on the forum)
Install Ubuntu on top of standalone version or something it should be!
(sorry tucked up in bed on iPad so can find files for you!)

  • Sorry m8, I had an early night! This version of ubuntu is Ubuntu Server 12.04. It is not a graphical version of Ubuntu, It is terminal based meaning that all the features are controled from command terminal. This version of ubuntu leaves a lot more resources for the important applications, and in my opinion it works far smoother than the GUI version. On the downside, you are going to have to learn a few commands and come to terms with running your system from the terminal. Here is a link to all the commands you will need to control your Ubuntu Card sharing Server from Putty.

From what I have read, you are setup just fine so far. Work out what part of the tutorial you are at & continue on until you are able to access cccam & oscam WebIf's..

    Good luck

Two ways to take that up, either your not sure what your router is or you have a $ky Broadband router.. If you are with $ky Broadband, Im not sure how to access your router or even if it is wise to Setup a card sharing server when $ky is your internet provider.. If you are not with $ky Broadband then $ky has nothing to do with your router. By router I mean your Internet Router.. You will have to go into your router settings.. usually 192.168.1.1 & then your passwords... You will have to use google for that m8. I cannot put up a tutorial for every router out there, people have to join the dots with their own equiptment..

Have you downloaded putty & WinSCP as mendioned in tutorial?

This tut assumes a very basic level of understanding but if you dont know what your router is or how to access your router settings, I can only suggest that you might find setting up a card sharing server a little too challenging my friend. Everyone on here will help you out but before you ask questions, please google some of your problems and try to help yourself.

  • birdman99,

Do you mean how to setup port forwarding in your sly router??? the ip addy of your pc will have already been assigned,if you want to make it static you can access the router and go into the connected devices menu,it will give you the option to make the ip address static for that device.

If you do mean for port forwarding then follow this link; Free Help Forwarding Ports - PortForward.com

We also have a section on the forum for routers: Forum Gateway - Powered by DnP Firewall

  • Sorry ive give the wrong impression, i was wanting to just check id set up the static ip address up as it should be in sly router setup, I understand how to get into my router settings, yea im afraid it is sly broadband im referring too. I have another bband provider that would be better at my own address but was advised that the card must be setup at the same address it is issued at so that’s why im setting up at a family members house because its more practical financially.
Im a little familiar with all this type of stuff because I have a duo and tm500 ive also set up other receivers and a few motorised dishes for friends family ect....
Im just new to this end of the hobby and that’s why im asking for help.
I was confused by the tutorial and didn’t understand that I had to have all them programmes already installed, I totally missed the point im afraid..
The problem is that im following a tutorial with the wrong type of ubuntu so I just need to find a tutorial with commands only for terminal based ubuntu.
I’m going to try and get there.just need to look for another tutorial.

sorry for trouble,do appreciate the help you have given me

  • I would have never done it without help though. Isn’t that what this forum is all about????
All I need is a little help in finding the right way.

I thought you had been given a lot of help already bud, thatfellow and others have taken the time to reply to any of your questions!

I only posted the link to the vip membership section as most people who get help here feel it is appropriate to give something back to supoort the forum, all the help and advice that is given here from Admin through to registered users is done on a voluntary basis.Supporting this is a good way of making sure that "Help" is available to all.

  • OK birdman m8 Lets take this problem apart and try to find out what exactly is the problem. Here are a few points I want to clear up before we start

1.. What part of the tut did you get to? It looks like you got stuck on the setting static IP address within the router but before I start to go through that with you I want you to confirm that you did not sort it out over night.
2.. What is the Router's Make & Model No:
    3..

    Quote

We now have to set up a static IP address so we can use Putty & WinSCP to FTP files & execute Terminal commands Remotely

Have you downloaded WinSCP & PuTTY to your main computer that you are reading this tutorial on? (Not your Server)
4.. You said in another post that you got yourself a Smargo & an omnikey, I would suggest that you stick with the omnikey, much easier to configure & better all round IMO.
5.. After this tutorial is completed & you can access your cccam & oscam webif's, you will have to configure cccam/oscam to your personal settings for $ky & set up port forwarding & your card reader. For this, please use the search bar and if you still have questions, start a new thread in this section: Linux PC Servers Support

  • Firstly good morning and Thankyou all for sticking with me.
Im using a black sly DG934G router.
I got upto the Ip settings part went in using username pswrd and tried to find the section within the settings to set the static ip,I wrote the ip and mac address down and went in but couldn’t 100% say I was doing it correctly.
I then became stuck again when getting to the putty part because I think I was running the terminal based Ubuntu with none of the other recommended programmes already installed as the tutorial suggested,(so I was of to a non starter really)or was I supposed to install the programmes like putty ect onto this pc not server??
Ive downloaded putty and winscp onto the non server pc.
And am happy to use omnikey, that’s why I got both because I didn’t know which one would come in first for the job and there are cheap.
    :shake:

The Reserve Static IP address should be within the LAN Settings. Look for something that sounds like that or Pre-Assigned DHCP IP address's, Then enter MAC address of your Server & the IP Address you want e.g. 192.168.1.100

Firstly, you dont need any other programs installed, Just the selection I showed in the tutorial during Ubuntu setup where I asked you to select Only OpenSSH server.
Secondly, You cannot use putty or WinSCP to log into the server until you know the server IP address, hense why we are trying to assign a "Static IP Address" that will stay constant (See above & previous posts).

Log into your server with the username & Password that you set when installing Ubuntu, on the very first screen after login, your Temporary DHCP IP Address will be displayed.. You can log into putty & WinSCP remotely (From the pc you are reading this on) with that IP address to get an idea how it works, but that IP address will change every time your server reboots so it is Vitally important that you sort out your Static IP address.. There is another way to set your static IP Address, but if you find doing it this way tricky, you will find the other way even trickier..

They both do the job, I just think that Omnikey's do it better with less configeration..

I just noticed this in one of your earlier posts

It does not matter where you set up your card sharing server m8, If you wanted you could set it up with your Sly card in thailand and still be able to use it on your box's. You dont even need a Sly satellite on the house that you are setting up your server.. So If you wanted, you could set up your server at your own house and give out clines to the box's in your parents..
