Hi all
sorry if this is a silly/stupid question.
I have a Vu+ box with Black Hole installed, amongst other things. I found out that it is an old version, 1.0.0. After downloading the latest version, 1.7.9, how do I actually do the upgrade, and what are the considerations that I need to make when performing the upgrade, i.e. will I loose any settings /plugins that are already installed?

When asking for help ,its always better to give us as much info as you can,,,for example, I presume you are referring to a DUO as it is in your signature????
you could start reading the tutorials and come across this NOOBS HOW TO SETUP
this one HOW TO FLASH WITH A USB STICK
both are in VU+ tutorials
Once you reflash an image ,all previous settings,plugins ,etc will be "lost"/deleted/eliminated..
You could make a personal backup of settings ,although it is always better to copy all personal configurations by FTP to a safe location so they are handy for just-in-case situations..
Plugins can easily be added/installed after a fresh image reflash.. either through the BH panel or our ADDONS on TSpanel or
simply by FTPing them over or manually into correct folder(s)/file(s).

Format USB stick Fat32
Unzip folder to USB making sure vuplus folder is at the root of USB
Inside that folder (vuplus) should be duo and in that the files required!
If all that is correct > eject USB from PC and switch off DUO from the back
Plug USB into front of Duo and switch ON from the back!
Led Screen should begin flash and tell you 'flashing USB' on the LED screen (DUO)
It will tell you to remove and reboot when done!
Settings wise, make a note/copy of any clines e.t.c just for backup as these will be most important (write down or FTP them to your computer)
Run a backup from BH (not image backup....settings backup) this should store/backup all settings and lines and will save the backup file to you choice of destination
FTP this to you computer for safe keeping,
Run Flash and then when done, copy backup to USB > plug into Duo and reload backup settings using the BH Menu

At the possibility of asking a question that causes offence/gets me banned, It has, installed Gbox, MGCamd and CCCAM (with relevant lines). I'm not sure what needs to be backed up, and where I would then get these plugins after I upgrade? Again thanks for any assistance

Wow that is an old image lol!
Bare in mind and someone may clear it up you may have problems using the settings backup for this image on a newer BH version BUT
eitherway i little playing should get you sorted!
1st and foremost make a NOTE of all lines.....copy them over to you computer or write them down!
mgcamd cam will be a file called newcamd.list located in usr/keys
cccam cam will be a file called Cccam.cfg located in /etc on Duo
These will be the most important bits of info....anything else (plugin wise e.t.c) can be re-installed!
With above done, look for settings backup from within BlackHole menu! (not sure dont use image lol)
Run the backup and store file to location of you choice > when done copy this backup to your computer!
Then run the Flash of New Image as instructed above!
When that has been completed > add backup to USB and from within Black Hole menu look for 'Restore from backup or something'
It will tell you any errors but hopefully it should restore your settings and a reboot should have you back online!
FAILING THAT lol
With your lines saved/noted down
Install image as per above.....then from within the Plugins menu of blackhole you should be able to download most of you what you want
Add to the mix TSPANEL and all plugins, Cams e.t.c should be there for you to install!
When Cams are installed ftp your lines to the relevent positions (as above) and reboot box and your lines/cams should become active!
Lot to take in but follow it all step by step.....any Menu options that are not listed just look for similar (havent touched BH for a bit) and post anything your uunsure off!

One other question if I may, you say you don't use Black Hole; I know there are a lot of images, and I know I am asking a question that will undoubtedly be answered with it all depends what your preferences are,, but what would be the best image to use? I am really looking for something straightforward so my wife won't mind moving from sly to much ;)

No Problem mate, its what we are here for!
I would personally have a look at the Vix image 1st! - Much of the time its only a case of a couple of mins to flash and a bit of time to setup so trying images is no major hardship!
Vix is nice, Clean and Easy to Use.....perfect for those in doors lol and not to out there for the simplest of minds to understand lol

Have a look at my backup images in the link above, it is for solo2 but the image look the same!
There are plenty of screen shots in there of various images to give you a little taste but start with Vix....test it with the Mrs then go from there!

Mate, you are truly a star, and I cannot thank you enough. Can you (for a simpleton :P) point me in the direction of a good backup that I can use, and then, how does one flash a backup onto the box rather than a straight forward ROM flash?

Have a look at MusoGeeks backup image mate...im sure it will be more then enough to get you started.....you can add and delete andything you dont want and change bootlogos if you want to change the XMAS look lol!
