Multi Room

  • Hello,

Been trying to explore ways of getting multi room without buying another box, drilling another hole etc. So far I have been able to stream from my VU+ duo with the built in media server to my laptop with VLC player then use a hdmi cable from the laptop to my TV in the bedroom. However I want instant access and was wondering if this was a viable option:

    Code

My Sony TV is already hooked up to my NAS drive where the HDD for my DUO is mounted but the TV does not support the format the media server decodes the channels (.m3u) however the TV can play the TV shows that I have recorded in MPEG2.

I am hoping this will act as a media client to decode the channels from HDD or maybe I could save the media server channel list straight onto the device itself??

    What do you reckon?

  • It might be a solution, but it isn't clear about the processor on that link - You need hardware decoding and multi-core processing for it to be ok for HD to work.

As a minimum - geniatech atv1000 is an option - this has the basic capabilities

    - there are android apps that enable you to use the Vu+ streams

Also you could try the Raspberry Pi and XBMC - you will need to buy a propriety codec for a couple of quid, also - HD streaming wasn't too clever last time I tried this, but this was a couple of months ago, and there is now 512mb ram as standard so might actually do the job - not sure.

Oh by the way - I know you joined here a while ago - but as you are taking part - we would like you to do a quick intro post

    thanks.

If I take a while to respond, you can see why.....

  • Thanks for the reply,

I have found another mini pc that I am really tempted to get:

    Code

    Specs are a lot better.

My bro has a Raspberry Pi (and a computer programming degree) - Interesting bit of kit but I am not that tech savvy to make good use of it.

I am happy enough to stream normal SD. Streaming HD channels is not a real concern to me at the mo, as it still glitches when streaming on the lappy.

Do you think the device in the link is capable enough?

  • Yes that should do the job. Several android apps are around that act as a client for your receiver's streaming interface, so will be able to access the recordings, tuner, and even the EPG. As I said there is XBMC for android as well, and this can now use an external media player rather than the one built in, so hardware decoding will work.

If I take a while to respond, you can see why.....
